Bolt-on or neck through - what's the real difference?

Honestly, I've never noticed anything different between them. I mostly play neck through basses as I like the looks. Multi-piece neck-through with the neck showing... that is my favorite look.

I've owned 13 basses in my lifetime - 3 of which were neck through and to be honest I can't tell the difference. My 2 main basses are bolt ons and my acoustic is . . whatever an acoustic is (set neck?) I'm thinking about having a custom bass made and is it worth the expense to have a neck through?
Given that material and build quality are equal,.....Bolt-ons are a little easier and cheaper to build.
That's the only difference, from a builder's perspective.
From a player's perspective, you can have a new neck made for a bolt-on, it's easier to remove the neck and refinish the body, etc.
I neck-thru has the advantage of a slimmer heel carve for upper fret access.
If those things matter to you.
There's no other advantages one way or the other.

In my time I've played screw-on necks, set(glued) necks, and neck through instruments.

Not as a builder or someone far more schooled than I, but in my own experience, the real world where the rubber meets the road, this is my experience:

Primarily I played more neck through axes than most any other. 80's MIJ Yamaha BB's, 1200, 2000, 3000, 5000, then a pair of Alembic five-strings. As an aside, I also played a screw-on Yamaha BB1600, roughly equivalent to a 2000 or 3000 save for construction.

For me, the real advantage is the no-neck-block/heel. This is in combination with most neck throughs being 24-fret instruments. This does two things: First, should you decide to play 'up there', there's no neck block to catch your hand as you move. Also, you tend to have more upper frets clear of the body, often aided by the usually deeper treble-side cutaway. One of the things I pull out of the bag of tricks is to occasionally double a vocal line or riff, or play the bass line an octave higher if I'm only playing with acoustic guitars. It's now much easier.

But . . . that access is taken from the 34-inch scale, so now, you have less real estate between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge, which may put the pickups on a two-pickup axe closer together than a 20 or 21 fret instrument. This may or may not be a thing, depending on the player and the shape of the pickups installed.

Sustain is a two-part consideration:

ANY bass with a good setup and properly cut nut and serviceable bridge will sustain, especially on any loud stage. Length of sustain may vary from bass to bass, but I've never owned a self-quenching bass.

WHERE someone with the ears to hear it listens closely: In my experience, screw or set necks in a way 'interrupt' the lowest harmonics and tend to be more mid or lo-mid forward. This is often accentuated by the usual selection of 'white' woods (alder, ash, maple, etc.) present in Fender-Shaped-Objects. On many neck through axes, they tend to carry forward the lowest harmonics in a fashion not often heard elsewhere. My Alembic Elan Five had very pronounced low C's and D's, and you could easily hear the 'beat' of the fundamental or 1st/2nd harmonics in the right room and amp. And generally the presentation is more even than screw necks, which often have what I call that midrange bark or quack. Both useable, but may suit some more than others, and many won't hear this.

Finally, since the string tension is pulling on a continuous laminated assembly, all of my neck throughs were more stable than anything else. This requires the original build to be perfect in tems of milling the down angle of the neck/fingerboard (and REALLY complicates problems as you can't remove the neck), but this was never a concern ever on the Yamahas and Alembics, both built to very high standards.

Any construction method has its' pluses and minuses, but I liked the neck throughs best for access to the upper frets and a generally more sophisticated tone.

These are the things I found and experienced over some 20-odd years with that kind of bass.

My first bass was neck through - a 4001 Rick. My second bass was bolt on - an 80's aluminum necked Kramer. While it would seem that an interface like you have on a bolt on is an "opportunity" to lose energy (and therefore sustain), the Kramer had much longer sustain. This was not a subtle thing - I had to learn how to manage that ridiculous amount of sustain in certain places in certain songs - at the end of a song, if we let it ring out, the difference was obvious to everyone in the band. Yes, there was a huge variable there (aluminum vs wood neck), but that example shows that there are other factors that can influence sustain besides the neck joint architecture.

With a well made wood necked bass, it shouldn't matter all that much if it's bolt on or neck through. A bolt on gives you an out if the neck goes South at some point, but if the builder has properly aged that wood and knows how to make a good neck, that shouldn't be an issue with either route.

My G&L USA M-2500 might not quite match that aluminum-neck Kramer, but it has so much sustain that I also had to adjust to my approach in certain tracks. I remember the surprise I felt when I first noticed this during a band rehearsal. It's on another level relative to my other basses, and I attribute this mostly to the six-bolt neck attachment and extremely rigid quartersawn neck. The massive G&L saddle-lock bridge and MFD pickups with low string pull probably contribute as well. So yes, bolt-ons can have phenomenal sustain.
 
My experience with bolt-on vs. neck-through is that the bolt-on has more attack, or "punch" at the front of the note. The sustain isn't necessarily more or less with one vs. the other (that's dependent on other factors), but the front end attack of the notes tend to be a little faster with the bolt-on.

I would describe it more like compression - NTs tend to feel more compressed to me, where the note shape is more even and consistent. Along those lines, I've experienced the same with bolt-ons that use steel inserts and machine screws for the neck joint, rather than wood screws. As cool as that idea seemed, I noticed that most of the basses I've played with insert/machine screw joints are more even feeling, but lack the punch of a wood screw straight into wood. After that discovery, I later read an interview with Michael Tobias where he cited the same observations as the reason that he used wood screws instead of inserts and machine screws in his MTD basses.

I currently have a neck-through Muckelroy fretless and Yamaha BB5000A, a Warmoth Gecko with steel inserts/machine screws, a number of traditional wood-screw bolt-on basses, and a set-neck Epiphone Jack Casady. Each one is pretty unique, but the generalizations hold true. The neck-through and machine-screw basses tend to sound more compressed in a recorded mix than the bolt-ons. IMO.

I seem to hear this rationale too much “I like bolt-on necks so I can replace that broken neck”

so I have to ask… how many broken necks have folks needed to replace?

I’ve owned well over 60 basses, and I’ve built a few from scratch, and I’ve never needed to replace a broken neck. Do I need to play harder? :D

I can't tell the difference , I don't think anyone can really hear the difference . Can these same people hear the same difference if basses played through different amps and cabs ?

Not a luthier:

To my understanding, you can have bolt ons with great sustain and neck-throughs with poor sustain... it's just a matter of how the construction lends itself to the physics of the question. A through-neck will have a different vibrating mass than most bolt-ons, and that'll affect some of the resonant qualities. That would account for others' observations that neck-throughs don't get dead spots.

I think that a contributing factor could be that a neck-through instrument is more challenging to make and require a larger, single piece of wood vs the neck and body of a bolt on. I don't know, but I have heard, that there can be a premium on the price of pieces of wood that are both big enough for a neck through bass but also good quality and without any internal aberrations. Someone who's going to go through that kind of effort and expense vs making a bolt on is less likely to waste it on a subpar piece of wood.

So the overall quality of the product would increase, but not because the neck-through construction directly influences the quality.
