Totally agree, the tone of Boss's digital multi effects sound sterile and lacks any what so ever character, I much prefer Zoom over Boss, especially when taking into account that similar Zoom effects often can be had at under half the price.
First impressions of using it: not too shabby! It's really easy to setup and create patches with your existing pedals. I have my loops set up as follows:
Loop 1: Future Impact
Loop 2: After Shock
Loop 3: Multiwave Bass Distortion -> Manta Filter -> Lunar Phaser
I've only sampled a few of the Boss effects and they get the job done, but may not be best in class (i.e. Bass octave). Overall, I'm happy with it and find it easy to use.
Thanks! I was surprised by how small it was too once I got it haha. I haven't tried the ctlout yet since all of my effects are controlled by MIDI. If I still had my Pitchfork, I would have tried it out.
Almost ready to take the plunge on this. One question though, is it possible to pan loops 1-3 to either the left or right? the idea would be to send a clean and dirty signal through the effects and then out to separate amps. I'm sure it wouldn't work but i figured I'd ask.
I'm actually wondering the same thing. I haven't been able to check yet, but I'll check the manual to see if I can find anything.
That would be exactly what I'd want to do. Shot an email over to Boss, The MS-3 can't do it anyway.
I am now confident I can shoot a video with atleast ok video but more importantly good sound and i'll have my unit next week. Given the lack of bass demo's atm if there are any specific effects you would like to here let me know and i'll try and do something late next week or on that weekend once i've had a chance to play with the unit.
You'll enjoy it! I've been really liking mine so far. I'm slowly trying out more of the effects. Hopefully someday I will do a video too. I know a lot of guys have wondered about the Boss distortions and ODs, so maybe some of those effects for your video? I've been using my Aftershock for OD right now and haven't touched the Boss ones yet.
Yeah i'll certainly cover some drives, I use a Two Notes Le Bass for my main overdrive but i'll have a play with running some of the boosts into it, i'll also cover whichever drives I like most.
Time to rewire the pedal board, followed by building a new one in the next few weeks.

I have the best clean tone i've probably ever had, ESP LTD With EMG Humbuckers -> MS-3 (Graphic EQ -> Light Comp) -> Le Bass Clean Channel -> MXR Bass Comp -> Iconoclast -> Mixing desk + Headphones.
The clean boost also works well with the Le Bass's driven channel as do some of the drives oddly enough with the addition of the Bottom and Blend controls I actually prefer the guitar drives to the bass ones, although my favorite way to push the Le Bass so far is boosting the mids with the Graphic EQ.
Now just to build a new board then make some better cables.

How is the compressor in the ms-3? Does it work fine as a peak limiter? I haven't really tried it as a limiting comp, I have the MXR 87 that I'm using as the limiting comp it has a nice gain reduction meter etc which make it easier to keep an eye on. I'm using the "Light Comp" in the MS-3 atm in the front of my chain coming on at a really low threashold but also not compressing very much it works alright for that although its adding enough high pitch buzz to be annoying in some contexts but I haven't finished cabling yet so it may turn out ok.
I got my Boss MS-3 in the mail earlier this week, but haven't had time to try it out. I will most likely try it out tomorrow and use it this weekend.

I'm mainly running a Two Notes Le Bass, as preamp / overdrive / DI with the MS-3's Graphical EQ to do most of the EQ work so I can have presets with different EQ settings. I'm also using a Neunaber Iconoclast because I often play ampless and the cabsim on the Le Bass isn't quite what I want other then that I have a MXR Bass Comp as a end of chain limiting compressor. I like the inbuilt compressor for the front. That into a clean amp or desk is pretty much all my setup.
I use a lot of overdrive but not much distortion and by using the MS-3's Graphic EQ with different settings to Push the Le Bass I can get my 2-3 main overdrive sounds although I'm thinking about getting a VT Bass for times when I want a ampeg tone.
You may get away without the Fuzz pedal unless there is one you really like. All the inbuilt guitar overdrives / distortions / fuzzes have a blend and bottom control so you can get decent sounds out of them without giving up bottom end.
All the other pedals i'm now running with it or considering getting are for more specialized stuff like bass synth or ambient / postrock music
I've never used the Two Notes LeBass, but heard quite a bit of good remarks on it. I've kind of determined what comp. pedal to go with, but still open to other pedals. I very rarely play direct, but that's possible to change anytime. As far as the fuzz pedal, that's kind of a special "furry" design I always have...
