So I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I love the gt1000 core but tbh the preamps doesn't live up to my GK Fusion S no matter how much I think I've nailed it.

I've been thinking of ditching my GK head and getting a power amp (gss baby sumo 600w) but I'm not convinced the AIRD preamps are good enough.

Tempted to get a separate preamp pedal, the new Walrus Audio one looks great, but that's getting pricy!

So my options are:

  1. Stick with the GK Fusion and have the GT1K core in front of it/4cm to retain all the options I have currently.
  2. Get rid of the GK and replace with a lightweight power amp like the baby sumo or quilter BB. Then potentially add a preamp pedal down the road if I'm not totally sold at which point this is no longer remotelycost effective
Interested to hear how others incorporate it in to their setup or even have replaced their entire setups.
I personally would put the GK in one of the FX loops, which would allow you to easily move it around in your chain. If it has a cab sim you could utilize that, or put your output on Recording and try the cab sims in the CORE.

That's how I'm currently using it but I need to get longer cables, currently I have it sat on my head because I only have enough patch cables for 4cm

Can't afford anything too fancy but maybe I'll grab some cable and make a multicore to connect it all up. I need to get on the floor to get used to using the pedals.

I wouldn't even do the 4cm thing.

What even is 4cm?

4 Cable Method, where the preamp stage of your amplifier is placed before the GT-1000.

Basically this: Bass -> Amp's Preamp stage -> GT-1000 -> Amp's Power stage -> Speakers.

I personally don't think it's worth the added complexity and would rathe make the Amp just another FX block, with the Bass going into the GT-1000 first

Ahh. Thanks for the clarification!

4CM (four cable method) is more than that, it allows the external preamp, and the GT internal preamps to be used either independently or together (in parallel).
imagine the GT-1000 signal chain how you can re-arrange the effect blocks in any order, and the S/R loop block is your external preamp, so you can move your preamp anywhere before or after any effects.
(if using the Tone Studio editor, try to visualize the S/R loop block is actually your external amp's preamp tone section)

the 4CM connection is
bass > GT-1000 input > GT-1000 S/R Send > amp input > amp effects loop Send > GT-1000 S/R Return > GT-1000 L/Mono output > Amp effect Return > power amp > speaker.

So you can switch in/out your amp's external preamp and use one of the GT-1000 preamp's in its place, per patch.
You can place effects before and after your preamp.

Can you also do L-input>L-out and R-input>R-out if a DIVIDER is at the beginning of the chain ? I only checked this visually (no audio..) on the screen of my unit (I don't have the PC-editor).

I think in the last example @Correlli posted you'd preserve L/R signal throughout as long as you use stereo out?

So, I've fut'zd with this thing for an hour or so now and I can see how it would replace nearly all my pedals. This thing is bonkers, but it's like I'm learning a new language to get the settings in, assigning the foot switches, and seeing what it can do if I really dig into bonkers settings. It looks like the software basically shows me all the basic functions it can do, but I get to decide how I want to arrange them. I absolutely see myself using the 4cm, but likely the 8cm to include my preamp for both bass and guitar (SLO and Kingsley, respectively). I have a lot of work to do to figure it out, but sheesh... this thing is a beast.

On my unit I placed the L/R outputs before Mix-1, that looks different but is functional the same I suppose. Except this way you could set the Mix-1 to determine if the signal goes stereo or panL/R to the Sub-output (if the Sends are set as Sub-out that is).

@Correlli, maybe you can post a picture with this configuration ;)

Good point, Mix 1 = Pan L/R

It's an incredible bit of kit. My old pedal board was a tuner, compressor and a big muff that I never got to use in the folky acoustic bands I've been playing with absolutely loving having all these effects to play with although I need to start getting more creative.

I think for me the 4cm is a bit of a must if I'm using my amps preamp stage, I found the GK Fusion s can be quite boomy and heavy on the lows, especially paired with my Barefaced two10. With 4cm I can pop an eq in there after the preamp to tame some of those low frequencies. You can even use it to switch channels on your amp which is awesome as the GK Fusion has a really nice tube distortion channel which I can now incorporate into the signal chain.

The only criticism I have is that there's so much you can do on the unit that it's easy to neglect the actual playing, I need all the practice I can get!

Perhaps a dumb question, but I bet I'll ask more of those:

Does anyone know why the effects on the core differ from the effect to the FX block?

For example, I noticed that the CHO (chorus) block has four options (mono, Stereo 1, stereo 2, Dual), but the FX block's chorus options have several more (adding Prime, CE-1 chorus, CE-1 vibrato). Anyone know why this made this choice, or how this can be best utilized? Thanks!

My best guess is DSP pre-allocation. The FX blocks probably have a higher DSP budget, and can support the higher quality chorus algorithms derived from the MD-500.
