Boss GX-10

Managed to snag one of these for a decent price used from a fellow bassist on this side of the pond a week or so back.

Really enjoyed @Combinator YT review of this before getting which tipped the scales for me!

My initial thoughts on the GX10 having had it for a week or so now are:

- form factor is good and it's got a reassuring weight to it reflecting its rugged build;
- really like the touchscreen colour interface, which is a nice step up from my GT1000 Core;
- the editing software is easy to get to grips with (I guess helped by familiarity with the Core's similar software) and I've quickly figured out a standard clean preamp patch with a div / mix insert ready to put in whatever fx I fancy e.g. Touchwah up / down or Tremolo / Clean etc. It has a drag and drop approach which feels a little more intuitive to me than Core's more 'formal' standard patch layout.

Although it's not got the processing power of the GT1000 Core, it shares a considerable number (maybe substantially all?) of the fx patches / effects with its more powerful sibling with the same parameter options and I suspect it will be more than capable for most of my needs as a gigging bassist and whilst the greater power of the Core in terms of nuances of bass tone would likely be something you might pick up on a studio recording it's unlikely to get noticed by anyone in a live band mix. So I feel I may have finally found the spiritual successor to my trusty Zoom B1-4 as a standalone gigging board, which my little B1-4 sufficed as for a couple of years pre Covid, when I was needing to travel light to certain gigs.

The key thing I need to see if I can figure out next is how to assign the expression pedal to control parameters, other than being solely a volume pedal, but from other posts I've seen on the UK basschat forum, this shouldn't hopefully be too tricky and will open up some useful additional flexiblity for live use.

Finally...who knew that a Slicer fx could be so much fun?! It's got 20 preset slicer patterns and I've taken a shine to #13. Looking forward to seeing my bandmates reaction when that gets unleased on them at the start of 'Freed from desire' on Sat night!

PS - yup actually super easy to assign expression pedal to control parameters. For example: assign expression pedal --> tremolo rate with min = 0 and max = 80, and at the same time assign one of the display knobs to show tremolo rate (to give you both a real time check on actual rate and ability to dial it back in on the knob should you choose to).

Just adds a fun / useful dimension for live use to what appears to be a very cool mid-range multifx.

Boss just released the new GX-10 multi effect, with also dedicated bass effects, amps and cab sims. I was wondering about the compare to the current HX Stomp.
Any thoughts on this?

My main complaint about this, the GX-1000 which I owned, and the HX series is no XLR out to send to the FOH. Deal breaker for me.

Goes without saying, but someone was probably going to. So... As has been discussed in various threads on the subject ad nauseum, there are tons of TRS to XLR adapters on the market that make hooking up simple. Example given Pig Hog Solutions TRS(M) to XLR(M) Balanced Adapter Cable comes in everything from 5 to 50 feet, and you can get others that are just a simple adapter plug (which I've also tried but wouldn't recommend). I run one straight from my Stomp to the stage box or mixer, easy peasy and works without issue. But whatever.

Oh I agree. There are lots of adapters available but that’s not the point i’m making.
How difficult is it to to include an XLR out for FOH?
When designing these they assume that everyone will be running into an amp. They completely forget the players who are running direct to the board and are using IEMs and no amp. That’s short-sighted. . . . . . . . “ but whatever”.

Again, been argued/discussed on this forum ad nauseum. The size of the unit and the amount of guts stuffed inside preclude adding the XLR out due to room limitations. Although the GX10 being somewhat larger than the Stomp seems a better candidate. Point is it's no biggie either way, it's easily dealt with.

So it’s being argued. . . . . . . I mean discussed again! 😂👍 My response is longer than I intended so please excuse me for that.
Oh and before I forget, Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope it’s a great one.

Your point is, there isn’t enough room to include the XLR in the current design and I agree with you!
My point is they could have designed it into the unit in the first place when there was enough room.

The whole point of my initial reaction is that companies could learn a lot about incorporating some fairly inexpensive features from sites like this.
Mesa did just that with the new 800D bass amp.

You may not be interested but there’s a thread here that’s all about how @agedhorse listened to what players here were wanting and built it.
Launched in mid-September, this amp is breaking records in sales and is hard to locate due to high demand, and the thread is now 150 pages long.

A GX-10 with an adapter is kinda like lipstick on a pig. 😂
The number of PA, FOH, OB an other gigs I've done without needing some sort of adapter is very small. Complaining about not having the exact connector you want on a device that's powerful, well made and relatively cheap is just whinging. Back when I was doing these gigs I was working during the day as an EE, so I also have a pretty good idea of the cost and other constraints of specifying electronics devices. If an XLR had been used, and for other reasons beyond the connector price, the MSRP had gone up you'd be complaining about that too.
Guys - I'm just running a normal TS "guitar" lead from my GX10 into a line level jack input in our A&H CQ18T mixing desk, and similarly our guitarist from his GT1000 Core.

What are we missing?
You're obviously not precious enough.

Been setting up a couple of drive patches on the GX10 using the AIRD preamp fx. Managed to find the Orange Stack which I had previously been using on my GT-1000 Core, but not the Fat Tube which others had mentioned/liked on the Core and I was hoping to audition - maybe that's one of the fx not available yet on the GX10?

I'm finding that the Boss preset GX Dual Drive (with some added EQ to fill out the low-mids) is my current fav - it's a reach creamy drive! That comprises the OD fx followed by two of their preamps in parallel.

What's particularly neat is being able to assign the expression pedal to two parameters on each of the OD and the two preamps (6 parameters in total): the gain and level so that the gain on all three can be simultaneously increased while at the same time smoothly reducing the output levels on each fx so the overall output volume remains even. Combining that with one of the footswitches to kick off/on the two parallel-path preamps and I've got quite a range of drive available via the expression pedal, which will be handy for live use.

Spoke to soon and found the Fat Tube fx in the bass amp block (had for some reason failed to spot that one in the drop down menu previously!) Have quickly auditioned it...and definitely still prefer the GX Dual Drive and Orange Stack over that one, but YMMV obviously!

Have any of you guys found a particular fx that:
- delivers that warm break-up dirt to add a bit of grit to the tone? or
- any combination of fx / EQ that get's a decent Sansamp VT Bass DI emulation?

Hi All

New member so I will apologize upfront if wrong area.

I purchased a Gx10 in November for a great price and am trying my best to figure it out.

I can't seem to locate the Bass amps listed?? The ones on my gx 10 are completely different than those everyone here and videos talk about. Mine are Mars explorer, studio bass, rock crunch, synth madness, and some other weird names.

It was slightly used. I patched the firmware. Is it possible the previous owner renamed the Bass amps?

Thanks Man for a reply, just nervous. Heres a list of the Bass amps on my Gx 10:

30-1 Mars Explorer
Studio Bass
Rock Bass Crunch
31-1 Clean Rock Bass
T Wah Bass
Dist Rock Bass
32-1 Mono Bass Cloud
Synthy Oct Bass
Fuzz Bass

This is all new to me so I might be in the wrong menu setting.

Thanks
