Boss SY-1 Synth

A few times recently I've had FedEx show delivered an hour or two before it actually arrived so hopefully it shows up!

I just got off the phone with FedEx and my apt office. It showed up at the office. So weird! At least it's there. She said she'd try to get someone to drop in my apt too since I don't get off till after the office is closed. So it may be at my place when I get home tonight. We'll see. I'll report back in the coming days after I've had some time with it.

So I got a little time with it last night. This thing is fun!!! Love the sounds in it so far. I think for me, the simplicity of it is what I’m gonna like. You turn the knobs, get different sounds. Right there in front of you. Coming from the C4 that’s sorta nice. The C4 is amazing, don’t get me wrong. But there’s something about the SY1 that feels more fun and easier. Idk. Well see where I settle. But I really like the sounds this thing is putting out so far. Need to mess with it more this weekend. Hook an exp up to it.

haha do you use any other synth pedals atm?

No, I've had most of them over the years but they never seem to stick around long. But... the keyboardist in my band quit and I could totally cover most of her parts with a split signal. Thus, here we are :D The other option would be to use the iPad with a foot controller but that's just more stuff to bring to gigs.

Get one!!! I bet it'll get you where you want to be. The C4 is a super powerful synth engine but you do have to dig a little to get what you want. As in, with digital updating and downloading of patches and such. It can be ready made to go too. But the SY1 is just more simple and easy to use. I still need to really sit down with it and mess around but so far I really dig it. I say got for it man!! Especially given your band situation.

Does anyone of you use this pedal on gigs?
I would REALLY like to hear a recording of the song, in that case!

I listened to the full demo of all sounds on youtube, by My Bassist Chris. Good demo, but the pedal sounds like garbage, IMHO. The only decent thing was strings, variation 10. And I listened through good headphones.

I would be interested too...
This is the best demo I’ve found so far

I think half the issue is you need to dial in the right tone cos it can get extra “chimey” on a lot of settings and apart from pads I think almost every sound sounds way better with distortion and reverb after... can kind of see why they have that all in built with the c4 but I still like the what you see is what you get with the sy1.

So, I picked one of these up, and I am enjoying it. Starting to run into the challenge of what to set this to that is distinct from what I have already. I have an octave / fuzz combo I'm happy with for the dirty synthy sounds (MXR BOD and 3Leaf Doom 2, if curious), and I plan on picking up a POG2 next paycheck.

Kind of hitting option paralysis. Any thoughts or starting points? On gig lockdown with coronavirus, so I have a lot of time to fiddle. I do have an expression pedal to hook in as well.

Haha! Well, let's say it is not for me! ;) :D
I am still curious about if anyone here actually uses this pedal on gigs...

Well it's just been set up on my main board ready for gig use:
PB - 2003M24.jpg

In terms of signal chain I have:
Smoothhound wireless --> Boss SY-1 with the Tech21 Red Ripper in the SY-1's parallel loop to add dirt / fuzz in clean blend with the synth --> HX Effects for the rest of my FX --> SA Manta (as my filter multifx, may eventually get replaced by my HX Effects) and VT Bass DI for a bit of sansamp valve warmth + DI out capability.

Just one thing missing now in London with this coronavirus - any gigs to use it on! :(
