Boss SY-1 Synth

My wife got me this for Xmas. It's just phenomenal, especially on the Ric. Naturally, the Doctor Who theme should be your first port of call. The pedal is TARDIS blue, after all.

The send/return are still active even when the SY-1 is bypassed.

I've been using Lead 1, Variation 11 for Moog type sounds like Rush's The Trees & Spirit of Radio. You'll need the effect volume around 9:30 (assuming dry is at noon). I've found that Lead 2, Variation 6 with effect volume around 9:00 will cop the Moog Taurus sounds on Tom Sawyer & Red Barchetta. Don't forget, if you time it right for the last three songs (with Depth at 5:00), you can hold the note on the SY-1 a la Taurus Pedals while you play busy parts!

I haven’t tried that setting for those Rush songs but I’ve tried for a few Police tunes that employ a Taurus and I wasn’t satisfied. Good thing there’s more settings to try!

This nails 110% some other songs though (Fleetwood Mac - Seven Wonders and the guitar synth in Don’t Stand So Close to me by the Police)

Winterburn69, if you are looking for the fat Taurus sounds of say Synchronicity II you won't find those here. Probably the EHX Bass Micro Synth would pull off those low sounds although if you switch the Depth to 7:00 (an octave lower) on the SY-1 it may work with chorus. I should try that!
I was playing around with it again last night and found the organ and bells sound ok but may not be too useful. I have a POG2 that really nails the organy sounds.

Yep. Fat Synchronicity II Taurus (Don’t Stand So Close to Me as well) is exactly what I want. I have a EHX BMS (been using one for years) and it doesn’t hold the low notes as long as needed.

Haven’t tried the SY-1 with the depth down. Definitely will give that a try.

Maybe have the effect volume at 12:00 and the dry at 9:00 for a bit of depth. No idea what patch to would sound good here but I may try tonight and report back.

For those who care: I used Robert Plant's Burning Down One Side as my Taurus pedal template and could not even get close with the SY-1. The SY-1 has the synthy-distorted tone in varying degrees of spades but I couldn't remove that sound to make the warm, chorused sound on the cd.

I have been wanting this pedal for a while and was able to try one the other day. The simple controls had me super excited until I actually used it. I found some cool sounds but switching between modes and settings was too much "hassle". Lots of combinations and options in this unit...I'm just not into writing down multiple settings and then constantly making changes. It's simplicity is too complicated???

Couldn't wait anymore: snagged a used one for a slight deal. It's going to be so much fun to use. The Bass Saw Wave going through a Swell delay is monnneyyy. The Hold function adds an atmospheric vibe I wasn't prepared for. Still trying to feel out the rate/depth sweet spots, but so far I'm the biggest fan of depth maxed out and rate set pretty low. It gets circus music vibe real quick when the rate is above 9 o'clock.
