Bourbon...

Yesterday’s score. That Old Scout is nothing like the original Old Scout (which was the start of my bourbon craze). I think this new stuff is sourced through Dickel? Either way I hate to say it but it’s pretty much “Yuck”.

Ha, Old Scout got me going too. I had the Contradiction and loved it.
I'm afraid to try the new stuff since they sold out. I have a few cases of the originals.
At one point I had a cool relationship with John Little when SA was still new. Not anymore though.

I love the original. Thanks to @Dave Hill who put me on it. Back when you could get a bottle all day long for $20

Yep.
They won the best single barrel at the World Whiskey Awards a few years ago, and that's when it broke loose.
I'm down to my last few bottles of Contradiction. It'll be sad when that's gone. The single barrel is still well stocked.

I was having pizza in Pike Place market in Seattle tonight, and next door is a brewery. I'm not much of a beer guy, but I could recognize the Smooth Ambler logo a mile away.
Check out what I saw in the brewing room:

I checked the website for the brewery, Old Stove Brewing, and sure enough they mention an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels. I was surprised they didn't mention SA by name, but now I know.
There was no one at the brewery today to chat with, but they have a restaurant a few minutes walk away. Next Thursday when I'm in Seattle I'll go check it out and see if I can chat up someone who works in the brewery.

These days breweries don't often mention the specific barrel used. Sometimes the distillers want that. I know a local brewery that had SA barrels and they released them just as bourbon barrels. It might be part of the agreement of the barrel sale?

Good points. I've seen them go both ways, but you're right about it likely being related to the agreement.

Ironically, when I went dark on talkbass, it was because I started hanging out at talkbeer. I was a HUGE beer geek for the past decade, but that catches up to ya, so now I try to ignore what's going on in the beer world and look around here instead. I can't tell if spending all my money on pedals is better or worse than on beers.

BA brews are pretty awesome though. I used to be a huge fan of bourbon county stout. Goose Island eventually sold out to ABInbev and the quality and value of the product has declined significantly over the last several years. No matter though...beer geeks will still line up in the wee hours of black friday to buy these.

If you really want to experiment with Barrel Aged stouts, I recommend the Eclipse series from 5050 brewing. Bottles are a bit pricey at $30 a bomber, but in my opinion they really do the best job of highlighting the barrel character and every year they release about a dozen different barrel versions and identify the barrels so it is fun to open a few and taste the differences that the barrel imparts on the flavor. For my money, their elijah craig aged beers are the best.

It really is the best of the bourbon's that aren't poached from shelves the second it appears...and better than most that people pay thousands for in my opinion.
