Jack doesn't meet the bourbon standard by the fact it isn't made in Kentucky. Even if I somehow managed to concoct a Scotch that tastes like it came straight out of Speyside here in TX, you wouldn't call it Scotch, would you?
Jack is ok but extremely overrated, IMO. Gentlemen Jack is alright though.
Is it a standard? It seemed that region isn't a technical requirement for Bourbon, it is for Scotch
(I'll also say that we don't tend to call it Scotch here, tends to just be Whisky or a Malt )Though I will say it's a common faux pas, that I'm also guilty of, to call all American Whiskey, Bourbon.
I see bog standard Jack as being on a par with the likes of Famous Grouse, nothing particularly spectacular, but good advertising and a large consumer base.

Discrimination? Racism? Inequality? You be the judge… About a month following a rumor I heard through a friend about how a former DJ was no longer asked to DJ at Maker’s Lounge because he was attracting a crowd that was ‘too dark’, I read about a pending lawsuit against Maker’s Mark Bourbon Lounge on 4th Street Live, alleging discrimination. Below, I provided a few media outlets and their reports, in addition to something that caught my attention in an email I received yesterday via their promotional distribution list. I’m not here to pass judgement… so YOU BE THE JUDGE!

EEOC resolved 28,321 race charges in FY 2008, and recovered $79.3 million in monetary benefits for charging parties and other aggrieved individuals (not including monetary benefits obtained through litigation).

Additionally, the Courier Journal reports: The former director of promotions and marketing for Maker’s Mark Bourbon House and Lounge at 4th Street Live has sued the bar, claiming she was instructed by management to discriminate against African-American patrons. Kiersten Trover-Gillam filed suit earlier this week in Jefferson Circuit Court, claiming management instructed her that it wanted a “predominantly white crowd” and that she needed to “keep out the darker element.”
Three alleged incidents are detailed in the suit:
*Trover-Gillam was instructed to approach a group of African Americans having a birthday party, get contact information under the pretext of signing them up for restaurant promotions, then remove them from the promotional contact list. Management instructed her to give a “false, nondiscriminatory answer” if asked why a check-mark was by a black person’s name.
*She was asked by a supervisor “what were you thinking?” after she booked a group of African American Central High School alumni for a promotional event. Subsequent to that, Trover-Gillam was told “things are not going well” and that she wasn’t “booking the types of parties” management wanted.
*She was instructed to convince African-American patrons to move to the back of the bar so they would not be visible in the front of the establishment. [Read the full article on the Courier-Journal]
I recently received a promotional email from Maker’s Mark Bourbon Lounge and noticed that for job opportunities, please send your resume and “picture”. Though I don’t believe it’s illegal by any means to request a photo during the screening process, it seems a bit abrasive during a time when such a lawsuit has been filed against Maker’s Lounge… don’t cha think?

We wanted to share our response to media stories regarding the Maker’s Mark Bourbon House and Lounge. Be assured that Maker’s Mark will take the appropriate actions in this situation.
And as for what kind of Bourbon I drink (when I do)...Its been Makers Mark.
Red Stag is my magic elixir of life. It courses through my veins like little alcoholic erythrocytes of cherry-laden goodness.
For those of you that like Stag, Evan Williams makes their own variety, but it's far, far too sweet for my liking. For those of you not down with the sweetness, Jeremiah Weed also makes a cherry infused bourbon, but it's harsh and kinda icky to my buds o' taste.

I'll definitely be sure not to lend my support to the Makers Mark Bourbon House and Lounge at 4th Street Live.
But, when I need me a bourbon, Makers Mark it is.
When I was 19 (legal drinking age at the time in Texas), I started with Wild Turkey. I drank a lot of it. The good thing about Wild Turkey is that it doesn't taste like anything else, so it's harder to get ripped off at a bar. Now I can't stand the stuff, but I will have an occasional drink just to reminisce.
As for what I'll drink now... If it involves mixing, I like just plain Evan Williams. However, I have a great fondness for sipping Evan Williams Single Barrel, and wouldn't think of mentioning any mixer in the same sentence. Their single barrel is a truly good bourbon, at a great price.
The last decade or so has been great for bourbon lovers.

First Bourbon I ever tried was Jim Beam, and it was (and still is) awful imo. On the rare occasions that I do have a little bourbon it's usually Wild Turkey or Maker's Mark. A;though I hear a lot of good things from friends about Evan Williams Honey Reserve, I'll likely give it a try soon.
I really don't care for the original Jim Beam, but the Beam Black Label is my go to bourbon. It's a world away from the crappy white label stuff but is incredibly inexpensive.
Other than that I try a little of everything: the iterations of Jefferson's reserve are pretty high on my list. Maker's Mark, Bullit, and Turkey 101 are solid mixers. I'm going to have to disagree with the folks recommending Buffalo Trace, Anything Evan Williams, or JD; I've never had a good experience with any of these.

I would never drink Seagram's by itself, but it does a decent job for what it has earned a reputation for - a whiskey that is good for mixing.
Very smooth and sweet, better IMHO than the other honey whiskey blends. I'm not a snob about whiskey but I am a snob about honey.
All whiskey is "white" when distilled it is the aging in charred oak barrels that give it the amber color.
To that, make it a double amen
. Seagram 7 and Ginger Ale was my poison of choice for many years.

Id be careful, the diehards may come after you. Just don't say anything about playing gigs for free and you should be alright. I made that mistake once...never again.
I love seagrams mixed with ice cold tall Dr Pepper from a fountain. It tastes a lot better than if its just bottled soda.
My long standing favorite is seagrams and sprite. It'll get you drunk and fight off a hangover at the same time.
