Brett Favre Retires

+1

John Phillips, a promising Dallas TE, tore his ACL and ended his season in the Hall of Fame game.

He can/has to take that chance, Why not Farve????

Anything you can possibly surmise, IMO involves special treatment and isn't fair and equal to other players.

God Bless, Ray

The difference is, Mr. Phillips doesn't have 18 seasons of pro football and tons of records and accolades to his name. He is playing for a spot on the team, and as such he has to show his worth.

If the Vikings didn't think Brett was worth the hassle, they would've got a different QB, or if they weren't idiots, I can't tell yet.

And :)

That's my point. Farve GETS special treatment because of the past and I think that's a crock.

A player like John Phillips has the potential to surpass Farve in records and accolades. Difference is we won't know if Phillips can do so (Yet) because he HAD to be at Camp/Preseason and inadvertantly tore his ACL.

Besides IF Farve makes it through week one, he won't make it through week six. :hiding:

Well, how did you feel about Emmit's holdout, just out of curiosity? Did he get the same hate, or was it ok because he was a cowboy?

The picture of Eli that is swimming around with his forehead spraying blood is why starters need to protect their body, and personally I have no problem with them missing some pre-season games to save that resource. My biggest issue is when they sit out for more money, which Brett/Vikings/teammates have made it clear that this isn't about money.

Well, how did you feel about Emmit's holdout, just out of curiosity?.

First, I don't remember Emmitt missing camp/preseason entirely EVER. Farve has. Secondly Emmitt's "holdout" was a contract dispute NOT a threatening of "Oh I MIGHT retire". This years version of that was media fluff, however it IS based on prior fact.

I don't Hate anything, period. And I sure don't play favorites or give anybody a "pass" because they don Blue & Silver. I'm the first to criticize Cowboys players and the organization when they lack morality/fairness. I loathe Jerry Jones (ask Gard):D I do however disagree with Farve's practices in recent years. HE IS NOT A TEAM PLAYER. He's entirely selfish and cares nothing of the players/organization/league or FANS that pay his salary.

Not playing starters to "save" them is standard procedure, however not showing up to camp to help the team you're hoping to "get that ring" with is not.

Frankly I believe Farve is ignorant in doing so, even in selfish, self aggrandizing, frame of mind.

NO WAY would I put myself out there at 40+ to "get a ring" without fully preparing the entirety of everyone I work with.

Set yourself up to end up possibly in a wheelchair or not having the ability to walk is utterly unthinkable if everyone isn't prepared and on the same page. (I walk with crutches, and if I could walk without them, I wouldn't take the chance of needing them PERIOD, much less for "one more year" that'll end the same way as last year because of unprepared teammates).

That in and of itself shows the unabounding ignorance and foolishness that is Brett Farve.

Brett "Half a$$ed Dumba$$" Farve

Emmitt missed two regular season games over a hundred thousand dollars and told Jerry Jones that without that extra $100k, he was going to fly to Texas, clear out his locker, get his ring and go home. Somehow I feel like that is a lot worse than missing a preseason game. Remember, this has nothing to do with injuries or contemplating whether his 41 year old body can hold up, it was over $100k in a $13.4 million dollar salary. So less than 1%. So much for caring about team mates, fans and a super bowl ring.

I can't help but feel like Vikings fans, coaches and players want Farve back. Without him they are left with TJ or Sage as the QB. For them the choice goes

Farve, who missed part of camp and preseason game, WHILE recovering from surgery that he got to try and play the game with you again,

OR

Sage or TJ.

Now, I have no knowledge of his personality off the field (Gard has that covered), but he would have to be some kind of team mate for 4 Vikings players to come see him without calling ahead, ask him to come back (not for a ring or money, but for the love of the game and the fun of another season together), and it to mean enough for him to jump on a jet and be in Minnesota ready to play 3 days later.

Contract disputes are an entirely different animal than "special treatment" because you're an 18 year vet.

Emmitt won that battle too. ;)

At 41 I'd expect nothing more from Farve than to be at camp, helping the rookies/newbies learn, PT etc. I'm in no way implying that he should even play in preseason at all, but skipping all that entirely, simply "because you're a vet" is bologna.

I don't care about Brett other than him skipping camp etc for a couple years in a row and then showing up to "unretire" as soon as the regular season begins. IMO that's not how a man rolls. As to the Vikes guys who went to see him, neccesarily they did that for self preservation too. Because they KNOW that without Farve, they're SOL this year. Your implying that they think of him as some great compadre and friend, and that may or may not be the case.

My main disagreement with Farve is the egotistical theory that he's "special" and shouldn't have to do the "dirty work", but rather show up when the curtain opens.

That theory is fine and loads of people subscribe to it, however I personally believe a "man" does the "dirty work" when he can, and he shows he isn't above others.

He is also recovering from major ankle surgery. According to doctors, the recovery is not complete. So you could also argue that his love of the game and encouragement from team mates motivated him to show up at camp before he was medically cleared to do so.

You're favoring Emmitt because he was a Cowboy. He had a signed contract, and he refused to honor it until he got more money. Emmitt should have been a "man" and did the "dirty work" he signed up for. I don't see how you can excuse that behavior based on your expectations for a "man".

Nice job avoiding the question and actually taking a stand.

Missing 2 regular season games over 100k when you make 13 million dollars is more asinine and more egotistical than what Favre is doing.

But hey, he's a cowboy, so free pass right?

Pot, meet kettle.

I'm not favoring Emmitt, IF he had a signed contract then ABSOLUTELY he should've honored it, and waited until his contract "expired" to negotiate. I thought that he was negotiating a new contract and if that were the case, a "holdout" would be understood. If the holdout was simply "more money" while he HAD a current contract, That's BS. CASE CLOSED. Irreguardless of team affiliation.

No free pass, but nice job avoiding the rest of my post to duck responding to the entirety of my point.

Point being, contract disputes are different than being able to skip camp because you're a superstar. That point is valid irreguardless of team.

And as I said above, if Emmitt pulled a stunt with a signed contract in play, that's wrong, period.

Bottom line is, I was in my teens when Emmitt played, and I wasn't as privy to information as I am today.

You guys took the "Contract disputes are different" portion of my statement to indicate that I was aware of and agreed to all circumstances around Emmit's situation, and that's simply not the case. How 'bout asking if that's the case before arriving at such a misconstrusion?

ANYBODY WHO PRETENDS TO BE ABOVE OTHERS IS WRONG.

Stand enough????

Now read the entirety of my point before drawing conclusions.

I didn't think you would comment on the matter without an understanding of how it went down. I assumed you knew the details. My mistake.

No mistake made Mike. I only knew that the "issue" related to his contract rather than being put above the other teammates which is what I believe to be the case with Farve. My comment on the matter related that opinion. I'd never go for that mess Emmitt pulled either.

I'm aware Farve's recovering from surgery and I'm aware he loves the game. If he can toss the ball in Mississippi, he can be in meetings etc.

I'm not for anybody being "special".

;)

It's all good. :D

Good point. But is that always true? I'm no Cowboys fan, quite the opposite, so I don't know when that contract was signed. To bring clarity and relevance to this post I'll use Darelle Revis as an example. He signed his contract before he became the number 1 CB (IMO) in the league, and due to that change he therefore deserves a new contract. He's making less money than the 3rd string QB for the Jets. If Emmitt Smith improved a lot after he signed his contract he deserves more money, just like if you have commit to working 40 hours a week and end up doing 80 hours worth of work you'd deserve more money.

Plus these guys are humans too, that 100k was probably still a big deal to him.

He had 134 other 100k amounts waiting for him, not to mention an implied Superbowl ring at the time.

Edit: Do you know what I would do with 100k?

No, Emmitt was making 13.4 million dollars and wanted 13.5, so the 100k was about 0.7% of his salary at the time. It was in 1993 after it was widely thought that Emmitt was a top 5 back and after he was getting paid like one.

And no, there wasn't any improvement, but then again, its hard to improve on the kind of consistency Emmitt had.
