Brian Bromberg Carvin Model Part 2

I think I've seen that bass on the Carvin site in-stock. Maybe it's a refugee from some NAMM shows. The bass looks like such a sweet deal that it's a little scary. Why let go of such a beauty? What's really going on with that bass? Conspiracy!!!

This used one has a better return policy (30 days) than a new one (10 days). Seems like plenty of time to find any crazies in the basement...

That is my B2 bass up for sale on my friend's website. It is brand new, no issues at all. I just never bonded with it.

I did purchase it new from Carvin recently as it was an in stock bass. I was going to order a 4 string and figured let me give the 5 string a shot. I just never got along that well with 5 strings and will order a 4 when I get the chance.

Nothing bad to say about it other then it wasn't for me. It is currently set up with a set of Thomastic Infelds if that matters to anybody.

Thought I would shed a little light on it. Peace.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. I almost did what you did but got chicken and went with a 4 string. I love my Bromberg 4. However, I would eventually like to get a 5 and at $799, it's kinda hard to resist your old bass. Had I not already bought a new guitar recently, I probably would have made a bid by now. But I don't know, we'll see.

Here's a general update, a more detailed review and some fresh pics (of course):

I've had a couple weeks now with my fretless B25PF and all I can say is that I'm completely thrilled with this bass. The clarity, tone and feel of this bass are as good or better than any fretless I've owned and I've owned plenty from several top end builders over the last 26 years. I have really figured out some of the best settings for my personal taste and have had a couple of those "I forgot all about the bass and was just completely into playing" moments. It is an incredibly comfortable instrument to wear and play. Everything is just in the right place; hand position, neck angle, etc.

I completely forgot to mention the set-up on this bass in my first post about it. Whoever is doing the set-ups at Carvin needs to start putting on clinics about how to set up basses properly. This thing has the lowest, most perfect set up I've ever seen. All I did when I took it out of the case was tune it and HOLY SMOKES was it fantastic to play. The neck also hasn't moved a bit, even during the crazy heat and humidity we've had here in Virginia.

The "hard as nails finish continues to impress as well. If you're on the fence about it, don't hesitate. I wouldn't order a fretless from Carvin without it now!

On to the fretted: As I posted before, I had some problems with this bass when it first arrived. I promptly returned it to Carvin and received it back yesterday. They definitely took care of all the issues and it is 100% good to go. I unpacked it, plugged it in and it completely delivered! Again the clarity, punch, tone and flexibility of these basses simply can't be beat. It now has that serious, aggressive, single coil tone I was after and then some! As with my fretless, I'm completely thrilled with the tone and ergonomics of this bass. As Mr. Bromberg has warned in a couple of his on-line videos about these basses, you have to be very judicious with the pre-amp. A little goes a long way and it is capable of really powerful boosts, especially the treble! Slappers beware yet enjoy!

The fit and finish are superb. Huge congrats to whomever is doing their stain and finish work. The "Deep Orange-burst" is great. These pics don't do the quilted maple or the stain justice though. It really is spectacular under lights:

Thanks very much to Carvin and Mr. Bromberg for a couple of absolutely spectacular instruments.

I love my new b25p. Ive been playing on it for two weeks now, but it did take some getting used to. I was playing a mex fender jazz 5 with really thick strings and mile high action. Plus I'm an upright guy so I'm used to digging in hard. The b25 responds well to a lighter touch, and the strings take right off with only a little bit of friendly persuasion. Sustain is great. Slapping is easier, too.

The radiused pickups are great. I ordered the single coils, so they can be a little noisy at times. I considered the humbuckers, but had heard that the singles have better tone. I am playing over top of the back pickup, and found that this is also tempering my right hand attack. The pickup is like a ramp and prevents my fingers from going down farther in between the strings. I can definitely get some good speed this way.

In general, I think this bass sounds more sophisticated (or modern?) and my levels are more evened out. I feel like I'm cutting through the mix when soloing, but the tone is also just great for laying it down, too. I am running the eq mostly flat with just a little bump up on the bass. I was afraid it'd be too bright. It's not, and I have stainless frets on mine. I haven't used the piezos a whole lot, but I have a couple jazz things coming up and I can't wait to take them for a spin live.

I did notice that there is no push/pull for active/passive. I read in this thread earlier that Brian did this to even out levels when switching pickups. Also, the pickup knob is reversed (forward for bridge and vise versa). This is fine, and im used to it now, but I just wasn't expecting it.

It looks so choice! Deep wine quilt over entire top, five piece maple neck with walnut strips, chrome. I am truly thrilled every time I pull it out. I hope this post nudges anyone considering getting one to do so. It's worth the wait. I bet the fretless model with the piezos sounds killer.
