Brian Bromberg Carvin Model Part 2

Yo guys, in Seattle this weekend at Jazz Alley with Jeff Lorber, Everette Harp, and insane drummer Gary Novak! Great band and great times. I just got a new B24 with a Koa top, alder wings, ebony fingerboard, nickel frets, stock bridge with no piezos, and gold hardware. I got to tell you that this bass kicks ass! I have never had a figured Koa top bass before but it is beautiful and sounds fantastic! I will post pics of that bass as well as a new walnut topped B25 with black hardware and ebony fingerboard. Both are oiled finish natural wood and look beautiful. I also have a sea foam green B24 with a flame maple fingerboard and chrome hardware, and a white B24 with a flame maple fingerboard and chrome hardware. The white one has piccolo bass strings on it. Stay tuned for pics as these basses rock!

Hey Brian,
Good to see you on TB! I can vouch for how amazing your basses sound. Wish I could make it up there (that's Dee Dee's hometown!) Have a great gig!

does carvin have an option for a passive tone control (traditional passive style roll off) in addition to the active circut?

Not on the Bromberg with single coils. That preamp is special and has an active volume knob. You can order an Icon preamp module for it, and that is the one that comes with it if you order humbuckers (the Bromberg pre does not work right with humbuckers).

The Bromberg electronics sound amazing, though, even without the passive option.

The SB and B series also have preamps with active passive.

It's funny how circuit boards work. The board we did for the B2 4 and B2 5 basses sound amazing with the single coil pick-ups, they really do. In fact every venue I have played since I have been playing the Carvin B2's the house sound engineer's have always commented on how great the basses sound! I can't tell you how good and proud that makes me feel.

But, the funny thing is that my circuit board with the humbuckers just doesn't seem to have the same mojo that the single coils do. We have no idea why. Maybe when the alien spacecraft crashed in Roswell in 1947 they were more single coil pick-up fans instead of humbuckers? Hey we got fiber optics and the printed circuit board etc... from the crash. You would think those little grey guys would make a board that liked both pick-ups? Nah! Maybe we need more unobtanium in the module?

If you want the humbuckers instead of the single coils order the bass with the Icon circuit board as that combination sounds great! We are looking at it and trying to figure out why the B2 module is more single coil friendly, but if Icon module sounds great with the humbuckers then I'm cool with that. It's all good for me.

As stated before the reason there is no active passive push pull switch on the B2's is because when you use the pick-up blend knob on the push pull pot the volume drops 10-20% in the center detente position. I didn't want a volume change when the pick-ups were panned in the center. It was a trade off. I like the push pull active passive but not at the expense of having the volume change as well on the pick-up pan knob. If you really want the push pull then you can order the B2's with the Icon module.

I'm really digging the new bass on the gig, wow! I will post pics as soon as I get some that are decent.........Tangs

The Sekou Bunch Active Electronics have the passive tone control that works whether the active circuit is engaged or not. Now that I've heard BB explain the circuit and pickup combination on the B24 and B25 I'm Jonesing for one bad....

They are amazing basses in feel, tone and look! I had a B25 with the HB/Icon module, and it sounded great. But I have the Single coils/Bromberg pre in there now, and it's just another level. Roll in a little of that Piezo Pickup (that is also tweakable with the pre) and it's just in a world on it's own.

The Koa topped bass I used in Seattle with Jeff Lorber is awesome! You can see the pics of it on the Carvin B2 Bass page in Facebook. This was the first time I really used the preamp as I usually just use the bass flat with no EQ and the pick-up pan in the center. On this gig I used some of the mids for the more finger style playing as well as used the blend knob to get more bite out of the back pick-up. The active blend knob really showed it's stuff with totally even volume panning the pick-ups. The most rewarding thing about playing this bass is how musical and versatile it is and how much fun it is to use the circuit board the way it was designed to be used......

Thanks Brian

I'm looking for a Carvin 5er with the 17.5mm spacing & the SB5000 isn't, the LB75 is & I gotta check about your model

I'm looking for a different sound than my musicman Bongo but the same neck dimensions & string spacing. Any pickup recommendations to achieve that in your experience?
