I remember the 6 page manual that came with the
Ampeg upright basses.

It was actually quite informative.

Here is an excerpt from page #2.

"Deep sound penetration is always present, because bass notes are composed of big sound waves that travel longer and farther. This is why the bass is often said to be "felt" rather than heard. The seasoned professional knows this, and plays with sensitivity and discretion.

By following the operating instructions below, you will be able to obtain the full performance features of the bass, and avoid unnecessary distractions."

...and of course, any manual has to have the disclaimers for the hard-of-thinking:


Do not attempt to put this bass in a microwave.

If using this bass as a boat, please ensure all passengers wear lifejackets.

Take care not to push the endpin too far into your foot.

Young children should not be inserted through the F-holes.

There may be others...

Yeah...before you know it basses will come with as many labels on them as ladders.

Just got a notice from Lemur today that the new "Wood" basses are in store and in stock. They said that they plan to keep one in the showroom for trial playing at all times. If anyone's in the vicinity, I'd love to hear some reports on how these basses actually play and sound - proof, pudding, and all that as opposed to speculation.

In the next month or so I will be going down to try out the non German-made version of the Wood bass. Jerry is going to give me a call when their first shipment arrives, and I'll be hopping in the car to go down and give it a shot.

If there's a German version in the shop at that time, I'll give it a go...

Was just ordering some strings and rosin today, and happened to ask Jason at Lemur about these basses. He said that they have the German version in stock, and that it is set up with spiros (mittels, I believe), and that the height is pretty low, as per Brian's specs. The bass is also decked out with Brian's pickup menagerie, including a mic of unknown origins over one of the f holes, a Full Circle, and a "wilsonlike" pickup in the bridge that was designed by Rick Turner. It is sitting in the showroom as a demo, and will be there for the foreseeable future.

Should anyone happen to stop in and play this bass, please post a review. :)

When I talked to him two weeks ago, he had just changed strings- after 6 YEARS!!! The windings on his E were giving up, and you can actually hear them on one of the Wood II songs at the end- his fingerprints were singing on the disintegrating winding on a held F#...he had weichs. Don't know for sure, but I think he replaced them with weichs as well.

What an amazing thread. Where else can you find discussions about serious cat's setups, basses etc answered by the player themselves!
Seriously though, I hope the fact that Brian Bromberg himself largely agreed with Ken's take on the BassvsBassist debate will make folks less likely to rail against a lot of Ken's comments. There's a lot of unwarranted "bass-snob" stuff laid @ his door when (as he pointed out) postings re plywood basses open the floodgates. It's like going to the EB side of TB to say "Keep your vintage Fenders, Warwicks, Alembics etc - cheap Korean P-bass copies are the way to go..." :bassist:
On the bass front, I moved from a small C19th 3/4 French bass. The newish Testore copy I have now (I sound exactly like bottesini btw - on his rare jazz recordings:p ) sounds huge by comparison and is a far better bass for me. Now, if it just had a bit of the "oldness" or "refinement" of my last instrument? I have recordings of me on both basses & the differences are clear.
I'm sure the Lemur Wood will be a real nice little bass & another great "off the shelf" option for bassists - and that's probably where it's biggest strengths will lie.

I hear alot of NHOP and Mraz in Brian's playing too (maybe more than anything else), but I'm sure Brian would agree that he has been influenced by PC, Ray Brown, Stanley, Gomez, LaFaro, yada yada.

I love the version of Witch Hunt on Wood II!!! Brian plays every cut (on all of his records) like it might be the last tune he ever records. That what I love about him, more than his technique or his amazing tone...it's that sense of joy and passion for music which comes through so strongly, all the time.
