Broughton Audio Super Thread

Ok Broughtoners. MonoComp vs. Photon Death Ray. For those that have owned both. Can you compare/contrast for me?

I'll say it. Broughton by a mile. I never got along with the Photon. There was always a loud 'pop' at the start of every note and with the limited controls I could never dial in a good sound. It was always too much or not enough. To me it's just a Diamond that costs more and doesn't work as well.

Told you I was going to say it.

I compared the Monocomp to the PDR-Vactrol here:
Testing Compressors: Cali, Smoothie, Empress, Diamond, Keeley, FEA, Darkglass, Doc Lloyd, JHS & more

The main difference between the Monocomp and PDR is the human ear side chain in the PDR. That's the secret sauce, IMO.
Is that regarding the Vactrol or regular PDR? I never looked too hard into them, but hear nice comments, I agree with you on the Monocomp being an upgraded Diamond, lol that's what I like about it. The new Empress rules too though

Both have human ear side chain.

I will own another Empress Bass Comp in a few months when they redesign it to be noise free. It is one helluva compressor packed with features and huge sound in a smaller enclosure. It's quite impressive!

Ok, yeah I was just reading, TM'd and everything. I know the Monocomp has a personality about the attack/release too, once it gets to squashing quick it takes a min to die down. One thing I wish monocomp had was a input/sensitivity ect., you can't control signal on the front end, aside from changing the voltage/power supply, I definitely have to be careful how things are before the pedal or the character completely changes to NO comp to ALL the comp, but manageable - I still think even with the EQ flat it sounds amazing at high power supply/high input signal

Well since I haven't tried it yet I can't answer definitely but like you said, the filters are what is catching my eye.
OH, ok - well EQ wise the 3leaf has it beat, I'd say the V1 and 1.2 Messenger are more comparable in features, aside from that all important phone jack. Messenger is a very transparent preamp, very modern IMO - but don't get it twisted, I use one every day, March 5th there will be more and I bet a decent chance at getting one

It is nice if you need everything on one pedal. Otherwise, you could look into adding a Low + High Pass Filter to your signal chain.
I'd rather have it all in a single pedal for ease of use and space. I like the Enabler. Seeing a pedal that offers pretty much everything the 3 Leaf does, plus the filters is what's catching my eye. I will buy a Messenger in March (unless I manage to miss out on 'em), I was hoping not to have to wait until then to try it. And maybe someone is looking for an Enabler in the mean time..
