Broughton Audio Super Thread

Initial thoughts on the Subsonic vs the Octatron:

  1. Tracking is pretty much the same on both. Definitely not disappointing - couldn't go wrong with either.
  2. I still hate the Subsonic's soft button. The Octatron is not. Win there.
  3. For the apples:apples comparison (no Oct 2), they are different but different flavors of the same coin. Clearly both have OC-2 DNA. They both do the glitchy thing when hitting a low E and sustaining it. The Subsonic is slightly more "synthy" and striving to be more of that OC-2 clone whereas the Octatron isn't going to be a 100% emulation.

The Subsonic seems a bit more open and has some of what the Sub knob on the Octatron does. I can dial in a sound very close to the Subsonic on the Octatron.
  4. With Oct 2 and the controllable sub/EQ, it's a bit more "versatile" than the Subsonic. Again, not better or worse, just different.
  5. Not the biggest fan of where Seamoon put the AC jack. I do wish they had put it on the top.

Right now I don't have a clear cut winner since it's only a few hours in and I just fiddled with it quickly. I'll see after Sunday's rehearsal for a gig.
I'm not going to get into tracking, but if you have any issues with the fundamental dropping out, the synth voice deluxe description page, has some great ways to help with octaves

I have no issues with tracking. None. The E fundamental weirdness is consistent on every OC-2ish pedal I've played. It's weird. Pretty much all of those tips I do already.

Ironically, the SVD and I did not get on.

When i was a kid, like 5 or 6, i spent a summer in Tucson. First thing grandma told me was- “Shake your shoes! Turn ‘em upside down and shake them hard!”… Scorpions were everywhere supposedly, but i never saw one. Turned out we weren’t in Tucson, we were in a hotel in Terre Haute…Grandma liked her gin. She had us convinced we were in the desert because it was hot AF and we had no AC…Mom and Dad got back together later, but ever since, i been terrible scared of Scorpions. Now i have two of them.

Ordering question:

I recently got a Broughton Studio One and a SushiBox Finally v2 (w/12AU7). I really like the coloration that each gives, and (I believe) each has a DI with a transformer. I want to put them at the end of my chain right after my Cali Bass Compressor.

I like a clean slightly tubey sound with some brightness along with the warmth. Keeping in mind I'll use the DI on whichever one is last in the chain, how should they be ordered? Any ideas on which one has the "better" DI?

Also, I have a Studio Boost Mini. I'm finding that I like the coloration from that a bit more than the Studio One (the low mids have something that I can't replicate with eq). But I like the eq and master volume on the S1. What to do?

I sold my S1 and have kept my SBM. I've always run it dead last in the chain.

I always ran my S1 at the end, SMB and SB as well. I never had luck with any of the studio one series pushing a tube, it always got to be too much, or at least too much where I ran my S1/SB gain. Take that for what its worth. I don't think you'll be able to tell which is "better" though, DI wise. If I had to choose, it would be the Broughton though - but not because of a better DI

side note - I almost get the same results with the super stack. I use either/or super stack and studio boost at a time, I don't like both running simultaneously

Anyone ever have a defective CIOKS cable? Alla sudden one of my pedals failed. Switched to an identical pedal, both requiring 12 volts. Put the pedals on another port, they worked. Switched the suspect cable to that port, and it continued to not work. Cable looks unremarkable, but it wouldn’t work on two ports which function fine with another cable. Ive got three boards, multiple CIOKS power sources, a total of 30 ports, 30 cables and this has never happened. What is interesting is the fact that when the cable failed, the port stayed lit up. Definitely a bad cable.

What was strange was the cable was long in use, and apparently failed without any change in connection. It was not warm to the touch. Sudden loss in volume, the red indicator light on the pedal went dark. Hard to imagine how or why it failed.
