Broughton Audio Super Thread

Maybe... but right now, it's just the S300, which is a uniquely different device and a uniquely different price point than the pedals that are typically released. The market for an S300 is not at all the same market as any other given pedal he produces. If this is going to be the way for all drops going forward (which it doesn't seem to be yet), then yes it's a different approach/philosophy. But as of right now, I don't see this as anything but smart production management for an ultra-premium niche device with a very specific market. If "flippers" want to try to flip a US$1,450 piece of gear in this market , when anyone can simply click the preorder button direct, all the power to them. Otherwise, Josh can focus on design and production of his pedals and only work on S300's when someone actually commits to buying one. Either way, there's only one person who knows for sure... and the rest is just us speculating.
No one is flipping a S300. The two subsequently listed here stayed up at a reduced rate for quite a while. I wouldn’t expect pedals done to order, it strikes me as being unthinkingly inefficient. Any of the unobtainables mentioned would likely sell out even in lots of 50 before you could fill out the order form. This is a one-off.

The possibility exists that announced drops-i.e. product X will be available at 7 am July 20th will simply give flippers with a degree of sophistication a clear edge. Witness some of the past 3Leaf drops of 300+ units that sold out before consumers could fill necessary fields- gone in less than 60 seconds, only to be listed later here and on the Verb at inflated pricing. This happened.

The present marketing strategy- you pretty much know ~ when the drop will occur, but it isn’t definitive combats this in that buyers have to F5.

If i missed a drop here, it was on me. No one else. No real mystery- we pretty much know to be logged in in most cases between 6:45 Eastern to 7:30 at the latest. I’m ok with this, and i feel like this should continue. Everyone has an opportunity, apologies to those in Pacific time, those who have to get up @4 in the morning, but that would likely be the case if Mr. B announces his drops at a time that is comfortable for him, regardless.

Unless it is noon drop, something that a lot of manufacturers choose to do, someone somewhere will be inconvenienced.
I've always assumed that it was to foil the flippers also. I'm not sure how much of a problem they are now that more pedals are in stock and used prices are somewhat depressed (with a few exceptions), but I know Josh worked hard to tamp down on the flippers. At one point (quite a while back) he reached out to me to get my real name, because he had identified a flipper in my town and he wanted to know which of the two orders for our area he needed to cancel.

Even a noon drop will inconvenience someone, somewhere. I've been fortunate and I've managed to acquire (via drops or 2nd hand) most everything I have wanted to try. I have so much unused gear at this point that maybe I should hope for drops at inconvenient times.

I just need a little birdie (or maybe a moose) to tell me exactly when there will be a Quicksilver drop please. :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Well there's some merit behind that discussion, but I'm pretty sure talking politics is still taboo here so best not to get into that either.
In the US, the USPS is crappy regardless of which political party is in control.

Whatever.

Have we not grown past these discussions at this point?
Nobody owes you anything.
Come on, don't be like that. This characterization is reductive and dismissive. You may not care for the current conversation, but if you read closely you will see that:
  1. it's taking place in a new context (S300 built-to-order; just about monthly releases; some context for upcoming products) so it's hardly an unwarranted retread
  2. everyone has been thoughtful and respectful; no one has stated Broughton Audio owes them
It's really uncalled for to write "nobody owes you anything" :( Not cool. This thread is better than that.

It seems to me that any of the recent drops with quantities of 100 always last long into the day and are available to everyone who wants one. Some may even end up staying in stock for days/weeks. It could be that it's not good for him to have extra stock laying around in terms of the cost it's holding. Still, I think building in generally higher quantities would generally reduce the issue of people who want them not getting them. Maybe more like 75 per drop. There could be part supply issues that also factor in though.

I imagine its like trying to thread a needle whilst drunk. The market is goofy unpredictable at present for any number of reasons, and i think excess stock is the bane of smaller builders; the ideal seems to be smaller batch runs that leave a fair number of buyers happy and clear production costs, and leave the effect relevant.

I don’t know of many effects that check the box(es) for every genre of bass player. Preamps seem to be in demand regardless, and filters are “safe” IMO. There seems to be an over abundance of Dirt, but im making my assessment sitting on a couch.

At some point we all have more than we need, even the most degenerate of us. I may well be your King. I have undoubtedly less playing hours/piece of gear than any of you.

1590’s, gizmos have limitations. I imagine its takes a special creativity to come up with something that will scratch an appealing itch, something Josh seems to excel at.

A vacuum cleaner. We have, like four. I can never find where she put them. They always seem to be on another floor, and the one I bought last century finally seems to have taken a dump. I can smell the burning varnish on the coils. She runs it until it smells like burning hair and the bag looks like a Thanksgiving turkey. She has a host of worthless, bagless Dyson cordless sticks that just make noise. I would like to say they suck, except they do everything but.

My old one- the one that died cost $400 last century. A Kenmore canister. To replace it today using what i know about motors? Same quality? $1100. Much nicer, but it will likely outlive me. Anything less would be in the $700 range and leave me disappointed.

Miele canister vacuum changed my life.

Attempting to get back into skiing this winter after a 15 year hiatus. For my wallet, it beats restoring a classic car, I suppose.

After that, I managed to score a free warranty bag from Mono so if a custom P bass just happens to fit, I'm considering it preordained.

Wife is waiting for the new ninja autobarista pro to be in stock. I am too lol.
Next major thing is to build a shop. My garage is full of lawn equipment as I do that as a side hustle. It’s time to make some room. Hopefully can build a 40x50. Maybe I should sell the 900 preamps I have to help out lol
