Played at a jam session last Wed in Philly, took my black MJX5. Got asked off the stage after one song. Why because I was killing it and one particular guy got nervous and started panicking. He was like the next song coming up is my song. I graciously unplugged and walked off the stage. Still I left an impression and the Brute was sounding good even if I only played one song. Needless to say I laughed about the experience on the inside but kept my professionalism on the outside.

You know, when I see a skilled player who has better chops that me I take it as an opportunity to learn something new and maybe steal a few licks along the way.

When I see a skilled player I just sit back,take it in and hopefully get a chance to "talk shop' with the player and pick their brain. We all have skills to various degrees and we should aspire to reach new levels. Hate on skills and gear is for the those young cats who haven't lived long enough to have to prioritize life.. I commend you Philly...

Thanks for the welcome..i hopefully will get some pics up very shortly. I did a preamp change last friday. Installed a STC-3A friom Seymour Duncan and it made some difference in a good way. I had a Carvin LB75 with a broken truss rod nut so it was usless(neck had horrific bow) so I took the J99's out of it and installed in my JJX5 and I'm liking it a lot. Played a concert yesterday and I had a chance to really dig in and take it throught it's paces. May not work for everyone it may even cross some old bass player lines but it works for me and was economical.
I had to do a little dremel work on that pickguard but hey, it's not too bad. I'm gonna get a black plate to cover the neck pickup which gave me the issue. I put DR Black Beauties on it but I think some DR highbeams may work a little better. As I go through sstring changes I'll keep posting..Wow what a great instrument stock just a lil better now.

Man I never hate on another player's skills. I saw the Great Tony Jones on Saturday and man he was straight up killing it. I had just as much fun watching him as he did playing. Quite the lesson for me. I even let him play my MJX-5 when he broke a string mid set.

I know many of us are awaiting Tom's announcement, I know I am, so here are a few pics of my even more modded out JJX-5 to help pass the time.

Here are the results of my feeble attempt to "customize" my Brute with a newly acquired airbrush kit. I think imitation is one of the highest forms of flattery, and I have mad respect for Kevin and the guys at the Brubaker shop . . . Your the best!

Anyway, it's by no means perfect, but I had a lot of fun, and was humbled a few times too, in the process.

I love the look of the Brute SC, and I'm in the market for a new 5-string, but I can't seem to find any place that has them for sale no matter where I look. I've gone through the whole dealer list. Do you guys have any idea how to get a hold of one?

Also, that brute up there is stunning.

That fretboard is badass! What did you do to protect it from rubbing off from future use?

First off, thanks everyone for the kind words!!

My process was fairly simple and inexpensive. I laid down a few good coats of minwax polyurethane clear gloss, waited for that to cure out, sanded smooth, then added my color - clear gloss topcoat/paint that is mixed/tinted with compatible colors to be transparent so the wood grains still show, allowed to cure, then sprayed several more coats of the minwax clear gloss to cover and seal it. The paint I used says it's "safe and compatible with all clear/topcoats", including polyurethane . . . time will tell I guess. I still haven't wet sanded and buffed out the topcoat on the fretboard yet. So that should look even better after I do that.

I did a little of the same on an SKB-3006 that I got in trade last fall. The urethane on the board was worn through from a lot of playing and the BEM board was ugly and stained from sweat and oils. Something had to be done, preferably without having to refret it. So I took a stab at it, using this same process. That was a couple months ago and so-far-so-good! I inspect it frequently for any signs of failure in my process. Keeping my fingers crossed.
