Brubaker Brute Club, Part 2

Here are the results of my feeble attempt to "customize" my Brute with a newly acquired airbrush kit. I think imitation is one of the highest forms of flattery, and I have mad respect for Kevin and the guys at the Brubaker shop . . . Your the best!

Anyway, it's by no means perfect, but I had a lot of fun, and was humbled a few times too, in the process.

Looks nice. I'll bet Kevin would like that. So how does the Brute sound with the Delanos? and What kind of pre does it have.

Nobody has one right now, not even Brubaker. They are expecting a new shipment soon, at which point most of the dealers should have them.

Hey guys,

I normally wouldn't promote a bass I have for sale on here, but this one is pretty special and the Brute Club should know about it before others do...

This is the only surviving bass from the last doomed Brute shipment. It was the only instrument that was built correctly - its playing awesome and ready to go. It has a natural MATTE finish, chrome knobs, etc, all from the factory. These options will never happen again!

Just passing along the latest Brute news to the club . . .

From Tom Richards on the Brubaker Basses fb page:

HERE IT IS BOYS AND GIRLS, OUR EXCITING NEWS FROM BRUBAKER!

After consulting with all of our dealers, and after doing a large number of modifications here at the shop, ALL BRUBAKER BRUTE SERIES BASSES, BOTH STANDARD AND SINGLE CUT BRUTES, WILL COME STANDARD WITH A THREE WAY COIL TAP SWITCH FOR THE MUSICMAN-STYLE PICKUP!

Yes, that's right, now all Brutes will have the MM-J pickup configuration standard (we have discontinued the JJX series) which now gives you three basses in one!

The new production, which will ship from the warehouse here in June, will ALL have this modification!

I love the Delano pups in my Brute. The pre is a Delano Sonar 3-band with 3-way mid switch. It's a little brighter and more hi-fi then the Bart system. I'd say the Bart setup is a little bit warmer and smoother. The large, exposed pole, magnets on the Delanos really pick up every nuance of your playing. Also, they can sound nice and dirty/aggressive when you dig in.

Thanks. I'm considering a similar upgrade for one of my brutes. Of course the difference would be the Delano MM style pickup since I have two MJX5's.

When I was upgrading my mjx-5, Delano didn't make the longer MM pups, but that was a couple years ago. Maybe they've added that size since then, don't know??? I personally like the low-mids point of 250hz that the Bart pres have a little more then the 300hz on the Delano, but I also like that it's different sounding from my Bart KXB. Just a different flavor of "good" IMO/E.

I have a three way on my Single Cut. really nice mod to have. You could get a used MJX5 and mod it or maybe find a used one already modded. I've already suggested to Tom and Kevin that they make a Brute Jazz Bass. One similar to what he makes on the custom side of the house. Then there is the Single Cut Headless that's coming out with Soap Bars, and who knows maybe even a Brute Fretless some time in the future.

I think I may look for a used one and if need be do the mod. It all depends on the street price of a new Brute. Either way I'll end up with one because those necks are so playable to me. I picked up my Lakland last nite and it took me a little while to reaquaint myself. I actually experienced the phenomonon of string tension. Brute loose, Lakland stiff..These TB threads do stimulate thought and spread a little knowledge.
