Brubaker Brute Club, Part 2

IMO and tone is very subjective I have found the right string to run on my Brutes. They have Growl. Pop, and Zing. I like the sparkly zingy twangy piano string tone and they provide that. Just like any SS string they have a certain amount of drag but I tolerate that and just muscle my way through that. To me they have more of a twang than DR Hi Beams and I like them a lot. I got a set of 5's for 16.95 or so. Cheaper than a set of DR's. I love slapping my basses with these strings I have the Brutes with the original bridge and have heard stories of guys having to come up with alternate string mounting routines for their B strings. The .125 B fit without any alteration needed.

Thanks for the info..I fully understand the subjective aspect but I feel it's always good to get a reference point if possible. Since slap is what I'm working towards I appreciate your reply and knowledge...

I settled on Sadowsky nickels (I'm not a S.S. guy). They do make steels too. I may have one of the older bridges (i can trace mine back to '09) as i can really only use a taperwound B with the string gauge i like.

Hey man it's all good. I'm not one of those know it all hatin type of dudes. I just love bass and know that there are many ways to a goal. Congrats on finding something that works for you.

I don't know but the ones that came stock on my SC sounded damn good. I keep asking the same question myself :-) I guess they are what the factory had at the time. Many things are made in china and rebadged here LOL!!!!!!

I was just happy to find something that fit in the bridge! hahaha... The bass came with a set of unidentified strings and the only thing i could find locally with a taperwound B were the Sadowsky's.. i wasn't by any means trying to put down your choice of strings..:D

Nice pics from the clinic! When are we gonna get to hear it? :bassist:

Also, since you have both styles... is there a tonal difference with the ash body on the singlecut as opposed to the Nato on the original?

Yes they are tonally different. IMO the SC is more refined and more compressed. The Black MJX5 sounds more raw and open to me. Both however for their price points sound awesome through any decent rig. I have played my Brutes through Trace Elliott, Tecamp, and Markbass heads. They sounded good through all of them. A friend has a small fender practice amp that my black MJX5 sounds great when I play through it. The SC has a more narrow neck and I'm a little faster on it then when I play the MJX5. However when I go out and about my Black MJX5 is the one I take with me everywhere and is my main gigging bass. The SC is a little on the heavy side. I have a KXB-5 in build and when I get it, one of my Brutes will be used to test pickup and pre combos. I'm thinking it will be the SC. The Clinic DVD is being sent to me as of this writing to see if there is anything I want to edit. What happens after that is up for discussion as well as distribution/viewing. I'll make up my mind once I view it. If it's decent maybe I'll market it. If it is just average in terms of my delivery I'll just post clips for free.

I'm waiting for a natural Brute SC to ship from Grand Central Music. They were initially expected in early June, but I guess there were some issues with the finishes that Brubaker wanted to sort out before shipping anything. As much as I hate waiting, I love that a company like Brubaker that makes world class instruments still cares enough to make sure their more wallet-friendly basses meet a certain standard. It definitely adds confidence that I chose the right bass.

I prepaid GCM back in mid-May for my newly updated MJX-5. I knew it was preorder, then I saw where GCM Ebay site was gone for awhile. I spoke to them and they assured me the new basses would be at their stores by late June.

I was ready for a full refund to shop elsewhere for something else. But I agreed to wait abit longer at a small discounted price they offered me. Of course, I know they have not control over what goes on with the actual manufacture of the Brubaker basses. So I assume they are waiting on the companysame as I.

And with quite a few basses already, I'm not in a rush for another. Just read alot about these Brutes and I want to try one out. Now, I did see on GCM's site that newer posted ship date of around July 10 had been moved to July 16th. So either they know of another delay, are just allowing more time for the basses to ship, not sure why.

But I'm hoping my Brute will arrive in time for some mid-late July gigs. Or if another long delay comes, I'll just get a refund and shop for something else. My patience will be gone by mid July if I see more delays. And there are other basses out there I'd like to try out anyway. Let's see how it goes.
