Bruno Mars/RHCP *POLL*- Play Syncing! Where Do You Stand

Would You Have Played The Super Bowl Halftime Show Considering The Parameters?

  • Yes; if it were up to me, I would have done the halftime show with my band!

    Votes: 235 89.0%
  • No; I would have never 'play synced' regardless of the exposure etc...

So far...the poll numbers have been pretty consistent. 9 out of 10 of us would play sync the Halftime Show at the Super Bowl reaching an audience of 111 million viewers. 1 in 10 of us would pass on the opportunity.

A lot of us here who make their living or part of their living in music, work for a band leader. I just can't imagine telling your boss, nah, I've got too much integrity too fake it in front of 111 million. ;)

You have 15 minutes for a gig in the middle of a stadium, in a stage where 5 minutes ago helmets were crashing. Then, right after, the game continues. Main event is not the music, it's the game. I think that's about enough justification if there has to be one. There's a nice statement by flea in RHCP page about it.

Are you kidding? Who in their right mind would turn down that gig - regardless of the "parameters"?

If you have any business sense whatsoever you'd jump through hoops to play.

EDIT: And not only for the money, but even more for the experience and spectacle of the thing.

Each to their own, but I'm very surprised that 90% of you would agree to lip sync. I rather expected the results to be the other way around. Let's face it - if you're invited to play a gig like that, you're already successful. I'm sure any of these bands could insist on playing live if they wanted to. I can't think of anything more disrespectful to an audience than lip syncing to a backing track. In fact I think it's a disgrace. Just my opinion, of course, but everytime I see a band or singer do it, it makes me cringe.

I'm sure most of the audience couldn't care less about live vs lip sync. They would if something went wrong with a live act though, as would the organizers, record companies, TV companies, advertisers, etc. As would the performers who would look bad too. Welcome to the world of major money, these guys probably don't like to take unnecessary risks.

It has become a standardize practice now a days rarely are you going to find a band playing on a televised gig playing live or without some backing track. The ones in charge aren't going to take your word for it you sound great live and you never make a mistake the only reason you would be on is to boost their ratings period. They would rather take the chance of the skipping cd track than to find out you can't even play your own stuff live well enough to be in a cover band
