Buckeye burl

I absolutely love this buckeye beauty ............ lucky really because my wife bought it for me !!

The top on my fretless is made from the trunk of the tree that produces buckeye burl. According to Larry at Gallery Hardwoods, it's really rare to find pieces of the trunk that are usable and have a nice figure. This is mine:

Thanks! I love the sound myself. It's got a modern but not too hi-fi tone, really good midrange presence, and lots of available booty. Fantastic acoustic volume as well. I'm hoping to someday have a fretless twin of it made with a pink ivorywood board, or maybe a six-string fretted that looks just like it.

My 8-month old once made a stinky that looked frighteningly similar to the buckeye top on my Elrick. I still love it though, and I agree that it's way too spongy/porous to lend much tone to a bass.

I'm not a big fan of BB, but this one has grown on me. Kinda looks like someone took a Bunsen burner to the body. But it sounds and plays incredible. Kinda makes me want to keep it.....so do NOT make me an offer on this bass.

Now that's the first piece of Bucky Burl I really like. All I've seen so far is grayish-greenish (emphasis on the -ish) mottled dreck that looks like better fire wood than bass top.

Hey Bryan, thanks for remembering my painful ordeal.
Yeah, after all was said and done, I think Curbow's initial diagnosis was a bit more serious than the actual injury to the bass. But, until the clear-coat finish was stripped off, you really couldn't determine whether the wood was actually damaged or not. I would have sworn the bass was cracked in half by looking at it.
I ended up dealing directly with Pat Wilkins, since he had done the original finish work, and had him go over it inch by inch for me. It turned out that it looked much worse than it was - and man did it look bad! The cracks that went from the neck joint, through the pocket, and out the front, never went through the wood, but was just a good crack in the thick clear-coat finish.

He stripped it back down to bare wood and just started over. He sanded the neck pocket down just a hair so that the neck wouldn't be in there so tight that any tiny shift would create too much stress, the buckeye was sealed up nice and tight since it's such a spongy wood and gave it a nice new shiny clear coat.

UPS was erally great and covered absolutely everything without a hassle...Shipping to Curbow...Back to me...Back to Pat Wilkins - the repairs...and again back to me.
