Bryan R. Tyler said:The top on my fretless is made from the trunk of the tree that produces buckeye burl. According to Larry at Gallery Hardwoods, it's really rare to find pieces of the trunk that are usable and have a nice figure. This is mine:

I've also seen a Benavente made with this type of buckeye.

emjazz said:Brian, that Elrick is one of my favorite looking basses ever. How does it sound?
Bryan R. Tyler said:My 8-month old once made a stinky that looked frighteningly similar to the buckeye top on my Elrick. I still love it though, and I agree that it's way too spongy/porous to lend much tone to a bass.
I'll trade you my whiney girl-friend for it. She's definately whiney.Bass Atlanta said:Too funny !!!
I took this Elrick in on trade recently.

I'm not a big fan of BB, but this one has grown on me. Kinda looks like someone took a Bunsen burner to the body. But it sounds and plays incredible. Kinda makes me want to keep it.....so do NOT make me an offer on this bass.![]()

Now that's the first piece of Bucky Burl I really like. All I've seen so far is grayish-greenish (emphasis on the -ish) mottled dreck that looks like better fire wood than bass top.Bass Atlanta said:I took this Elrick in on trade recently.
