budget 5 string bass

i remember seeing a thread like this before but couldnt find it....

iv been thinking about a 5er for a while now but dont exactly have a large budget... im not interested in any SX basses or anything like that though, i was considering an atk305 but there is a large chance im purchasing an atk300 in a couple weeks from a fellow TBer, so having a 305 also doesnt seem to versitile, so another make or model or something would be nice, preferably in the price range of a used atk305...

and when it comes to sound, im looking for something aggressive and deep, because this is also replacing my epi t-bird.

i originally planned to keep my thunderbird and just buy an atk305, but decided to just pick up a more versatile 4 string, and get a 5er that can get some pretty deep tones like the thunderbird can.


iv owned the schecter custome-4 for a long time up until recently, got rid of it because it lacked some low end, but after that i picked up an mxr m-80 that adds some nice aggressivness to my tone, so i might look into them again...

wow, just googled it, i think this may have just taken the cake... i definetly need to go try this out soon (says bass wood body, dont know too much about basswood, can anybody tell me about it?)

This bass indeed rip's!:) I love mine!;) Great modern tone, fretwork is great, and isn't heavy at all.

Basswood(Pronounced like the fish), its a kindof unpopular wood, its dosn't have an attractive grain, but is way lighter than most woods, and sounds absaloutly fine on basses, a prime canidate for painted bodys, or flame/quilt maple tops.
I have at least 3 basses with basswood, all sound fantastic.

All of the above is of course IMHO.

I liked mine so much believe it or not I actually sold my MIA deluxe V because I actually liked the way the Squier played and sounded so much better. You can't go wrong with that bass IMHO.

until i go and play it myself, i think im pretty much sold on this one, thanks a lot :)

I love mine!! I played quite a few 5ers in the < 1K range and settled on the Active Jazz 5. I liked so much, I spent about the same price of the bass in American hardware and upgrades.

I just got back from the music store, where I tried one of the Squiers out. I don't have much 5-string experience, just playing the occasional one in a store - I have to say, I found the B string on this one, as well as the B string on a MIM Fender J bass a while ago, to be kind of flabby... I honestly do not know if this is a feature of the type of strings used, or just the Fender style implementation of a 5-string. I've also previously played a Yamaha BB 5-string and a StingRay, and both of those had a B string that was pleasing to play - definitely floppier than the E string, but more tension that what I've seen on these Fender style basses... maybe someone can chime in here and set the record straight...

Fit and finish on the Squier however seemed to be excellent! The tone was very good on all strings, except for a little fret buzz from a setup with too-low action. Nice and deep bass response.

That, sir, is a budget 5 and a budget 6 all in one package... I seem to remember someone cheaply (and rather successfully) converting this exact instrument into a six. :smug:

Yup a floppy as hell .125 Fender Bullit, that is terrible, felt rough as hell too. Once a decent B string goes on, its fantastic, still havent had a chance to try the .145, but the boomers I have on it at the mo are great.

The stock strings are garbage. I bought a set of DR Low Riders when took mine home. They improve the stock B string 110% ;)
