Yeah... it is indeed a good idea. Warehousing people is truely tragic... a total waste of manpower, tax dollars and other resources. Thin out those prison populations dramatically.

economy getting worse = more hard drug abusers. i don't know if that's true, but let's just say it is for current discussion's sake. you're talking about dealing with the junkies, when i propose what we should talk about is the events that lead to the current economic troubles and the conditions in which drug abuse thrives. but we can't do that, because i'm sure if we got serious about it we'd very quickly run into the dreaded political world. i'm open to civil and honest PMs.
hospitalizing drug abusers rather than sending them to prison. we'd need to create a whole new structure. one that caters to, and can handle the volume of drug abusers seeking and/or needing treatment. hospitals couldn't handle it as they are now. workers would need to be able to safely keep a supply of, and handle hard drugs as well as many other drugs and equipment.
well, what i'm describing is, in my opinion the only sane thing to do. legalize the godawful drugs so that the value will drop and people will stop killing for the money and set up drug clinics so at least users and abusers can be in a safe, clean environment with sterile needles and receive other specialized care for their situation. [similar actions can be taken to deal with the problem of prostitution, rape, sex slavery. set up sex health clinics. give sex workers rights and a safe environment. then we can deal with the other stuff quite a bit more effectively.]
you can't look at issues like hard drugs and just say it's about the dealer on the street corner and the junky breaking into your car to steal soggy chips. there is a LOT of money changing hands in high places for these things and the laws are in their favor. business as usual, the wealth of the privileged is protected from the public that bears the weight.
Well, in that case... I say shoot them. Donate the bodies to medical schools.
i think prisons teach unhardened criminals to be hardened. im up for the decrimilization of cannabis. 
I know there is an enormous prison industry that must be fighting this tooth and nail. We'll see whether corporate interests prevail. The madness has to stop at some point, and I think it starts with reevaluating the drug war. I don't have any answers, but I do know that what is happening now is not working.
Lets just lock all the criminals up in a large arena, give them some crazy weapons, and let them deathbowl it up. Last man standing wins his life, and a permanent vacation on an island in the carribean.

it is morally corrupt and heinous to deny your fellow man the right to please himself in a way that is harmless to others. Drug laws sicken me

So if make a mistake 20 years ago and then realize it was a mistake we should turn a blind eye to fact that is a mistake and continue to spend money on it because admitting it will make us look like "Flip-Floppers"?
