Calling all P-bass players!

I am curious.
I prefer precision basses, but I always felt like I needed two.
One precision with a rosewood fretboard for pick playing.
One precision with maple fretboard for finger playing
Do you feel the same?

Which board do you prefer when you play with a pick?

I have a maple fretboard on mine and I always use a pick.
Of course, it's not just any pick.

And I don't use just any strings, either.

I played with a pick for 20 years or so- '59 P Rosewood. Still have the guitar, and a 2014 American Special. Both Rosewood but I play about 80% of the time without a pick.

Can't say I do.

I like some Precisions better than others for playing with a pick. But I like some Precisions better than others anyway.

There's no correlation between which PB I prefer and the wood that was used for the fingerboard. I like maple and rosewood equally well - or have no preference either way - depending on how you want to look at it.

Fretboard wood is extremely important when selecting the color of the pickguard. Otherwise...

I prefer maple all the time....

that being said, 3 of my 4 basses have rosewood boards b/c other things about them were more important and I got one of the basses as a gift (my Fender 92 AVRI 62 Jazz), so I was not going to turn that away....

I have 4 P-Basses. All have maple boards. All my Jazzes (except an AV Reissue '75) have rosewood. I really don't care though. Just seems to have worked out that way. And I hardly ever play with a pick. I try to keep one handy all the time though, but only in case I slam my right hand in a car door or something on my way to a gig or practice...

I have two, one strung with flats and one with rounds. I am happy with either neck but mine are both rosewood. The string difference is more important to me.

I don't think it makes a difference but I prefer maple for the looks. Fwiw I have one of each.

I agree with DigitalMan.... the fretboard defines the colour of the pickguard. Since all P basses *must* have a tort pickguard, you need a rosewood neck!

Maple or Rosewood depends on what the bass I wanted came with-- I wasn't given a choice.


I happen to have two rosewood and two maple, and I like them both.

I don't believe fret wood makes a difference in the sound/tone at all.
