You are evil, comrade! Because of this thread (and your post particularly), I was haunted by this bass and took off work early yesterday to try it out. I'm not sure how I would use this thing in real life, but this is giving me a GAS attack! I really like my wife a lot, but this is a very cool bass.

d'oh ... alright I'm starting to feel guilty for feeding your GAS. Just don't do something drastic to your marriage like purchasing the bass at the expense (no pun intended) of your wife/family.

By the way, what was this bass again? Got pics?

Its a Rickenbacker 4003S/8. The serial number indicates it was made in 2001, but the store says its new (and it looks and feels new). Just the right kind of luxury instrument to have an not use very often.

In my surf band, I play (surprise!) the '62 RI Fenders, leaning towards the jazz now.
At church, I play the Smith, '83 Stingray and the '78 fretless Stingray.
I usually take the Cort Curbow 5 to practice during the week. I can leave it in my trunk and don't worry about it.

I would like to see pics of that arsenal!! Sweet!

How does the Fernandes compare to the original Fenders? I hear that they are probably the best Fender copies out there.

I don't have 10, yet.
But I do have 6, all the same brand.

Once upon a time, I thought all I wanted was one main bass and maybe a backup that was very similar to the main bass.

I have
a fretless five,
a fretted five,
a fretless four,
and three fretted fours - one tuned E A D G and one tuned D A D G and one that's more of a novelty than something that sees much use, although it does play and sound quite good.
I'm thinking I need a fretted six. (Not for any musical reason, but just . . . because.)

Besides the number of strings and the presence or absence of frets, they all sound different. Sometimes I just think that the sound of this bass goes with that song. Not that I couldn't play that song on one of the others, but this is the bass that that song should be played on. (That's assuming I have that bass with me and it's not in the case buried under a pile of other cases.) For example, my fretted five is often used on songs where I don't use the B string at all. Those songs could be played as well, maybe easier, on a fretted four. But just that bass, the combination of woods and pickups and whatever mojo is in there, sounds right for certain things.

Currently, I'm at 8 basses + an acoustic guitar, mandolin, and dulcimer. 3 of the basses are Spectors and 2 are Hamers (8 and 12 strings). Right now, I use 4 basses regularly of the 8. I usually bring 2 basses to a gig, and at the times I've used the 8 or 12 string, I'll bring 3.
G.A.S. is a powerful drug!!!!!!!!!!
