Can we talk about marijuana?

I realize that...I used algae as an example to demonstrate how subjective an opinion could be, not because I thought it was the single most useful plant...
The fact of the matter is that if you believe cannabis is the most useful plant, then it is like religion. No one can change your faith. That does not mean that your faith is without flaws, it just means that your faith is absolute to you

LOL. Like a religion? Please. That would mean that I take this information completely on faith, without scientific evidence. If you spent a few minutes out of your day, you would find that it arguably has more uses than any plant on earth, coupled with the fact that it can grow almost anywhere. Of course you wont find a definitive answer on the matter, why do you think growing industrial hemp is illegal in the US?

I don't wish to argue with you anymore, your opinion is your own. Draw your own conclusions.

Second, they may of been chance meetings, but they never would of happened had I not enjoyed going out and having a few beers with people. I would of just stayed in my apartment for the night instead of going out. So the options are really a chance meeting or no meeting at all, in that case.

So your choices are to go out and drink or stay home? I'm guessing you don't mean it that way, but the first read of this paragraph kind of gave me that impression.

What does this have to do with marijuana use? Nothing. You seem a little bent about the response from Munji, so I was just showing how easy it is to have your post misinterpreted with no harm intended.

Answering your question, YES I am sure some important figures didn't use drugs.

I'm sure some important figures did and some didn't. As far as I am aware there is NO evidence that Da Vinci, Shakespeare or Monet used anything, and equally no evidence that they didn't.

Feel free to post links to evidence if you have any, and if not, why did you see that statement as necessary?

If there is NO evidence that they did or did not do drugs, then I will stick by my opinion that they did. And, you don't need to know why I thought it was necessary. :)

Oh look, yet another stream where you are arguing with someone....

Merry Christmas!!

Neither :eyebrow:

First, where did I say that the people I'm attracted to do drugs (in this case alcohol) in excess? I actually said 'use it with care and moderation.' You would have known that had you actually read my post.

Second, they may of been chance meetings, but they never would of happened had I not enjoyed going out and having a few beers with people. I would of just stayed in my apartment for the night instead of going out. So the options are really a chance meeting or no meeting at all, in that case.

Third, I never said the common connection was drugs. The common connection could be anything from sports teams, to movies, to music, to basically anything. The only place where drugs come into the picture (again, alcohol just to be clear) was when we would meet at parties where *gasp* people drink  Again, the people I talk to are the ones who have a few beers and hang out - not the sloppy drunks who drink till they're throwing up.

Fourth, I never said I had social inhibitions. Again, if you had actually read my post you would of seen that I said that most people I meet I meet when I'm completely sober.

Next time you respond to someone it might be worth your time to actually read what was written instead of using some knee-jerk response that isn't even related to what was actually said.

No, I guess. My point is that "spirituality" is a throw-away term. It means nothing because it means anything. What in the world is one's "internal spirit"? Do you think anyone knows what you mean by that?

Even I don't know exactly what I mean by it. :)

But I still think it's a value question. Why do we feel the need to consume subtances that alter our mood and perceptions?

I don't do drugs, I escape into music. Is that a a better thing to do, or just my thing?

If you want an unbiased report about cannabis I suggest you read this.

This is the summary of the Senate Committee's study. You can read the entire study if you want more detail from witnesses, who presented to the committee, and all the studies and reports the Senate Committee examined. The Conclusions start on page 35.
I hope you find your reading enjoyable.

Will read in detail, but from a quick skim, the report seems to acknowledge that cannabis can have some harmful effects but not as many as some people believe. It's main purpose is to comment on the legal response to cannabis rather than the medical effects. Fair summary?

How about almost everything associated with the long journey we call human existance? Artists, writers, religion, social ceremonies, etc, bla, bla, bla......Do you think Leonardo Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Monet and a million other important figures in history didn't use drugs?
Lots of wonderful, great things happened because humans altered their minds.

If there is NO evidence that they did or did not do drugs, then I will stick by my opinion that they did. And, you don't need to know why I thought it was necessary. :)

  • Drugs are good because open your mind and foster great creativity.
  • Therefore probably guys like Da Vinci, Monet, and Shakespeare did drugs because they were so creative.
  • Therefore since they were so creative and probably took drugs, drugs are good.

Dear Devil's Advocate,
Let me play devil's advocate here; no offense intended, but in my opinion you don't know enough about this subject to be teaching others on this subject.

I don't smoke, rarely drink, but I certainly don't care of others do.

I think that to teach a subject that is so sensitive to some, the one teaching should understand the subject well enough as to be able to debate the pros and cons from either the side of one supporting or opposing marijuana equally well

Alcohol is a very harmful drug BTW and this is well documented by many scientists, but legal in most countries, available in large quantities,,,,,, very fishy imho!
Could it have and do with taxes, maybe?;)
If something is harmful, it's alcohol!
I think that people should have the right to use the earth's herbs without being deemed and seen as criminals!

Everything is dangerous if you overdo it,Its all about balance BTW!

The topic somewhat shifted from marijuana use to drug use in general (and this would include alcohol - thus my one post). It then started to question whether or not people can be users and still function in society and be successful. I commented and basically said yes they can, and that careful, moderate drug use could even result in some positives in a person's life (thus what myself and a few other TB'ers posted).

Mungi then called my post ridiculous and misconstrued the whole thing to fit his opinion. Honestly, anyone who has been on TB for any real length of time would know that he is very against drug use of any kind, so him calling it ridiculous didn't surprise me. What did surprise me and get under my skin, however, was him making assumptions on what I said and then taking my post to an extreme level.

small bit of overlooked history

towards the end of our nation's alcohol prohibition, alcohol was deemed legal for medicinal purposes. For the price of a doctor visit, a wink, a nudge and a made up symptom one could have a prescription for alcohol.
Marijuana is following this tried and true pattern. By comparing alcohol to marijuana, and stating the negative aspects of alcohol, you are making a case that the legalization of alcohol may have been detrimental to society. if that is the case, it is easy to draw the same conclusion about marijuana, because of the pattern of legalization. You make a case to keep marijuana criminalized by stating the harmful effects of alcohol

I am not necessarily against marijuana, and I was one of the voters who favored CA's prop 215, allowing marijuana for medicinal use (even thought I do not believe it is medicine). What I do not like is blatant lies about cause, effect, and use, and I do not want someone to try to insult my into agreeing with them. If the supporters would change their tactics it would go a long ways with me

Dear Ryco,

What is it exactly that I don't know. Please fill me in. Not sure what you think I'm missing. You guys really think I should be teaching a "pro" side to smoking marijuana to teenagers?

Still really don't know what the "pro" side is. The mind opening, creativity thing doesn't fly. For every creative person who did drugs I can name 10 equally creative who didn't, and the majority of those who you think were fueled by their pot and drugs, were also killed by it.

The only real benefit I read in this entire thread (aside from the medical purposes) was that it made some very sick people happy for a short while. Which I think is great. Still waiting for some info though on "the other side" of this that you feel I should know and teach about.

PS on all this. It's 90 minute class, and then we move on to the next subject. I need to be realistic about what should be discussed.
