Car audio speakers for bass?

Have personal experience. Was given two aluminum cone Audiopipe 15" car subs mounted in the typical car trunk box some years ago. Tried with an SVT head, sounded horrible. TS params available, ran the graph using TermPro (on MS-DOS!), box way too small, huge peak around 50Hz. Had 2 empty sealed 1-15 cabs approx 18" cubes, TS alignment showed essentially flat to 37Hz with that internal volume. Tried in these, didn't sound too bad but the specified 96dB sensitivity was obviously a lie. At the time, had access to audio measurement equipment and a well damped test room (a recording studio off-hours) Pink noise @10 watts, on axis, 1 meter, 1/2 space, measured -4dB down at approx 39Hz, slight hump around 42, sharp rolloff above 1.2kHz. Already had massive bass equipment, boxes went in corner of garage and forgotten. (Resurrected and dusted off 5 yrs ago as low end on a biamped rig and still using)
Conclusion: Can be done, but much better alternatives available. Need so much power that stock in the electric company is advised.

The surrounds on bass speakers are not paper. They are treated cloth, a blend of cotton, poly and linen (flax) fibers.

Some guitar speakers use paper surrounds but not bass speakers.

you can look at the Eminence website and look up the specs for bass drivers.

I looked on the Eminence site under "bass". I admit that I didn't look at all of them, I stopped after 30, of various sizes. I didn't see any with paper surrounds (or "cone edges" as they call them). They all said "cloth". Which ones are you referring to that use paper?

Actually, post #40 in this thread firmly substantiates my stance that subwoofers are not reproducing mids or highs.

See my post #50. Would never think, dream or hallucinate about doing it if the speakers and required power had to be bought. If I was about to spend an arm, leg and firstborn as some of the car-rattlers do I would get an Eighteen Sound 21" and a Powersoft to drive it! Here's the backstory: Got the speakers from a close friend, police chief in a small town who routinely would agree not to impound the car if the too-loud driver would agree to "civil forfeiture" and the box was "lost" before the auction. Got the cabs, with working D130Fs in them and a working Sunn Concert Lead from a guitarist who foolishly made a sizeable sports bet with no funds to pay it off after having bought a new Marshall stack just before the game. So the experiment cost me pizzip, had a use for the 130s and sold the head. There's a Peavey 130 1-12 combo on top, biamped rig. Actually sounds damm good, solid fundamentals, there's a visible Xmax of at least 1/2 inch on open low-E, Pushed with a Crest 8001, loud enough for most clubs and music-in-the-park outdoor gigs without FOH support. And unique appearance.
