Looks like swamp ash. 10 lbs without strings.

I have quite a few swamp ash basses. Includes in that are a 4 at 6.6 pounds (with strings), a 5 at 7.25 pounds (again with 5 strings). My heaviest bass is 8.1 pounds - a 5 with dual soapbars - again with strings.

10 pounds for a 4 without strings is NOT light. I wouldn't call that Swamp Ash.

A set of strings does weigh something. If you play a 5'er, it weighs a bunch more - a decent sized B string adds a lot of weight to a set. The gauges I use, the B weighs about as much as the E, A and D strings combined - adding it almost doubles the weight of the set.

My B string weighs 53 grams, or 1.9 ounces, or 0.1 pounds.

Assuming a full BEADG weighs 4 ounces, or 113 grams.

Then the strings make up 3.5% of the weight of an 7 pound bass, or 2% of a 12 pound bass.

No arguments, I just enjoy maths.

without reading any of the thread other than the OP, I'll guess "just over" 9 pounds. like. 9 pound 4 oz, which is 9.25 pounds if my brain is working right.

A few conclusions from this little experiment:

1. Fender bass bodies from the 70s can be ridiculously heavy

2. A solid rosewood neck weighs less than I expected

3. I obviously don't know my ash from my swamp ash

4. 7ish ounces doesn't seem like much but it makes a huge difference in "felt weight" when it's at the end of a 34" bass neck, and (4B) ultralite tuners would probably be a good investment

5. Whoever drilled the holes for my neck smoked a lot of pot

6: Sometimes a heavy bass sounds and plays so great that it's worth a little soreness after a long gig.

Now to put everything back together, slap on these new strings and make some noise.

I'm thinking the rosewood neck has a single action truss rod, that second bar of steel can add weight.
