Happy Holidays everyone. I wanted to share this with the group.
Carol Kaye has her own website and forum that she is actively involved in. You can join her site and talk right to her.
She is not only one of the greatest players and a living legend, she is a gracious and kind-hearted soul.

For those who don't know who Carol Kaye is google it......

I also have been a member of her site for about two years. I find the site to be very informative. She is very generous with her time and always replies to posts/emails/queries very quickly. Some like her, some dont, that is the way of the world. ;)

Remarkable lady, her history is so incredible. However I think there is some controversy over some of the things she gets credit for.

Me, personally,I think that bass line in The Beach Boys Good Vibrations is her's

True, Im there to learn from her, not debate her or talk about basses. She has so much to share if you don't rile her. 25 years of marriage I have learned how to not rile up a cranky woman

Regardless of what some people have to say about Carol, she was a pioneer and huge influence on many players. She has a tremendous understanding of jazz theory and can play her A-- off! I learned more from her instructional work than any other source!

I've read through some of her playing tips on her site and there's loads of great stuff there.

Personally, I don't study anything with anyone where questioning isn't allowed, tho (that's the worst-case scenario for any student-teacher interaction), so I wouldn't plunk down any cash of any kind.

Sadly, this is common in music and really the reason I finally abandoned music ed years ago. Truth value really takes a back seat, especially on instruments like ours that lack the pedagogical tradition of others like the upright, etc.

If you have a question on music theory, or anything to do with playing the bass, she will answer it in detail , and with gusto.

Her instruction material is ridiculously cheap.


What more could a student want ? :)

After what I've read about her on TB, I'm too scared to post there. In fact, I just became a member at carolkaye.com because you can't view the forums there without signing up.

Edit: I was just thinking about wishing her Merry Christmas from India, but I'm afraid she might find something amiss and delete me :( I'm staying away from the post reply button on her site for now.

Ah c'mon now !! :D

She's not that much of a scary monster.

I'm sure if you go onto her site and wish her a Happy Christmas, you will get the same in return.

The season of good will and all that.. ;)

Carol Kaye is a strange bird. She played on dozens of recordings and hit songs but somewhere along the way she seems to THINK she played on everything. The truth is she did a few big hits and lots of "B" side recordings. She wasn't quite in the league of Joe Osborne or James Jamerson.

It's kinda like Bernard Purdy claiming to have played on Abby Road. It's wacko. He still insists he did though. And people believe him. They figure that since they're such prestigious personalities, why would they have a need to "pad" their resume'? Who knows? But they're lying nonetheless. Or confused.

I think Carol may be bitter for never getting any royalties for "The Beat Goes On" -- which I think is deserved since that bass line is so much of the song.

And the bass part in Good Vibrations was written by Brian Wilson (he's bass player, you know) but Carol performed it.

She's a competent professional studio player from that era, but honestly ...there's nothing I've heard that suggests she's especially extraordinary.
