The old Warner Bros(Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck etc)- and pretty much everything from that era(30s-50s)had some truly astounding background music

Indeed! A DVD set of those were what introduced my kids to jazz and classical. Not only background music, and not only the famous ones like "What's Opera Doc?" Some of the very earliest Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies stuff were basically jazz music videos. Here's an excerpt from Katnip Kollege, about a school for jazz where a cat gets a dunce cap for having no rhythm - this bit is after he finally learns the beat from a clock pendulum.

While the cartoon itself and the character had nothing to do with music, the theme song, which also played throughout every episode, is a classic.

One of my favorite cartoons.

He was given a name - Michigan J. Frog. His name comes from the song "The Michigan Rag", which he sings in the cartoon.

Ha ha, yeah, started listening to Rossini overtures in my late 40s and they were all like old friends - heard countless times Sat. afternoon during
the Bugs Bunny Roadrunner hour right after Stampede Wrestling!

DMC is great, really over the top. There is a live action movie as well and Gene Simmons is in it.

K-On and Beck (Mongolian Chop Squad) have both been mentioned. Interesting notes about those two anime, all of the instruments and amps are "real" so you see the Fender bass, Yamaha drums Gibson Les Paul, Fender Mustang, Marshall amps. You don't always see product placement like that. Fender Japan even released a Beck Telecaster.

Robotech/Macross was mentioned, but there was also Macross 7 with the band FireBomber and the bassist Mylene Jenius
