Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

I received my SB5000 on July 1st. I must say I am extremely impressed! From the construction, to the tone, I am really feelin' it. Mine is ash with rosewood board and abalone blocks. I kept it simple yet traditional with a tort guard. It came in at 9.5 lbs exactly.

Yeah, that makes more sense. So basically this setup would function much like preamps used in Carvin's neck-thru models. The beauty of the SB/B40/50 set up is that you still have a tone cut in passive mode. So what's it going to be, passive tone control or mid/sweep knob? Guess I'll go with the passive tone cut. Heck, it's still a very versatile set up.

Very nice grain for ash... Usually it has that really wide, deep, squiggly type of grain.

Really? I didn't think anyone could still get a one-piece body regardless of wood unless they paid super big bucks from a boutique builder. Don't get me wrong, your bass is gorgeous, but are you sure that's not really a very well matched, 3 piece body?

The tour was great! It was a last minute call and only got the book the night before my first show but I got through it.

I don't think too many of us here are surprised that you got through the book. When you got it like that, you got it like that!!!

I was totally taken by this too. I've looked over it with fine tooth comb. I can't find any sign of a seam. I took a couple of pics of the endgrain. The grain runs continuously. Maybe I got lucky?

Every once in a while, I think they'll put out a one piece. I've seen a few here and there. But yeah, you were lucky... I recall looking at the one they did for Chris Buck, and I think even that one was a two piece.

But I agree... If I could be negative for just one tiny thing. The two color laminated truss cover is the one little sore thumb on Carvin instruments. I think they should go with one solid color, or metal or something.

WOW! you got Way lucky to get a solid slab.. Looks awesome man and I bet the sound matches!! I've yet to play a slab bass

I've been doing a lot of reading on this and the last thread on these basses and I want to konw if anyone has a fretless model? It seems that everywhere I look someone has a fretted..

I'm in the market (my wife says im not) for a fretless and I LOVE the tone and looks of these basses and it would be rad if the fretless sounded equally as awesome. I don't slap much so that put me off for a while since every vid I had seen was of someone slapping but I've heard a few clips now and it sounds a lot like a 70's jazz to me... (correct ears?)

Regarding the active control layouts, below are the two options listed under active electronics for the SB:

MBS - Stacked Mid Sweep Replaces Tone Control (Must Order AC)

MVB - Master Vol & Blend Replaces Separate Vol (Must Order AC)

So from this I believe the standard set up is: Vol, Vol, Tone, stacked bass/treble.

MBS option: Vol, Vol, Stack mid Sweep, Stacked Bass/Treble

MVB option: Master Vol, Blend, Tone, stacked Bass/Treble

Does anyone know if that's right? This is just what I assume from the descriptions at the Carvin site.
