Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

The Carvin Stainless strings are made by La Bella. They are cheaper than buying Stainless La Bellas. I bought 3 sets from Carvin for under $50! They are a tremendous value.

They also sell the black tape wounds real cheap. They buy a crap ton of them for their electric-acoustic line and just also resell them, passing on part of their volume discount.

Yeah that's what I thought as well, but didn't want to make the comparison lest the trolling start. But since you mentioned it, this SB5001 is a much nicer bass than the $2600 Sadowsky Metro I owned a while back.

Ok, I'm joining the club! I'm currently a MIA Jazz V player and I just purchased this SB5000 from pbfactor (who posted it in this thread when he purchased it new 4 months ago). Looking forward to trying it out! :hyper::bassist::D

My only real hesititation comes from just installing Delano pickups in my jazz about 6 months ago :ninja:. Seriously nice pickups! :D
Those new Carvin pickups seem really nice on the sound clips I've heard though.

I've found an issue with my bass. With both volumes up, I'm getting the noise generally attributed to a solo'ed single coil. Carvin tech assumes they forgot put one reversed pickup in my bass. So its headed back for some tweaking. Sounds like it will be gone 3-4 weeks for this work.

What? Are you serious? Why are you sending the whole bass back for this? :confused:

Unless I'm missing something about their pickups, this is like a 5 minute job with a soldering iron... no way should it be shipped and gone for so long for that... or, if they literally want the old pickups to check them out, pull them out, and have them just send you pickups... max of maybe a few days out of commission waiting for the replacements. And if you're not equipped to do it, it'd be a bare minimum charge from any tech to swap pickups.

They gave me that option. I don't have a tech I work with normally. I guess I can find one in less that 3-4 weeks though.

Does that mean the pickups were wired out of phase, or is this something different? If they're out of phase, you should be hearing a serious lack of bass when both pickups are up.

If anything, it's gotta' be the pickups... chambering typically adds low end, IMHO. Thing is, I think I had/fixed a straight up passive Fender J with this problem a while ago and it also sounded really thin until I fixed it. Some idiot desoldered the wires at the pickups instead of at the control cavity, and then when he put the original pickups back in for the sale (to me) he screwed it up. DOH!

Anyway, if that's the case, it should only make the big diff when combining pickups. If you solo each pickup are they both strong? Otherwise is one strong and the other weak? If so, then it's simply a bad pickup... would make sense if the neck pickup was bad/weak for you to have a lack of bottom.
