Well, the clip actually sounds pretty good, but it's hard to gauge reference from that. Do both pickups seem like they have the same output to you when you pan back and forth?

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

This may have been cover here already... but i was talking with my friend today and he said the is a 4001 and 5001 model which are chambered... That could be pretty nice...

Assuming the 2nd bass (on each riff) was the 5001, you are right - it's a bit more mid-focused, less thick in the bottom end.
Is everything else the same - the P'ups/preamp/strings?
I prefer the tone of the first one, which is the 5000, correct?

I got my SB5000 yesterday and I'm loving it so much especially the craftsmanship feels and looks like a top notch boutique bass. I had my guy set it up today with strings of my liking because I don't like the Carvin strings. I am having some slight buzzing with both pickups turned up but when I move the bass in different positions the buzz stops. I also must say the Pro Tec Contego gig bag fits the SB5000 perfectly and what a gig bag for the price!
Okay... you're the 3rd person in only a few days reporting that buzz problem with both pickups on full. Not exactly reassuring...

I'm impressed with my koa SB5000 which came today. The tone versatility and clarity is as advertised, and the neck is comfortable. The action on this one is very low, actually lower than I prefer, so I'll be adjusting that.
The koa wood is attractive, but appeared to me to be a little thirsty and lackluster. So I wiped it down with some orange oil and now it POPS - a rich luster.
Hopefully I'll get some pictures tomorrow.

It's also a VERY minor issue that is quickly resolved with a pickup swap by any guitar tech (or even basically skilled customer with a soldering iron). As I'm sure Carvin is being made aware, it'll get resolved. I would be far more concerned if we started hearing reports of problems with the bass's construction itself, like neck or fret problems. Question about battery drain - does anyone know if the battery juice stops flowing when you unplug the bass chord, or do you have to pull up on the active/passive knob to stop battery drain when not in use?
Now that I've got the strap locks on and have taken it through an extended session, I'll tell you - this thing is SMOKIN HOT!

You're certainly right of course. All I hear about the SB's is nothing but praise... it just seems like a bit "basic" of an issue to have, you know? It doesn't really influence me wanting one.

Bob, that is really a beauty. I'm glad you like the way it plays and sounds. There is always a leap of faith when ordering a bass you can't play first.
Koa is my favorite wood, and the cream pickup covers look nice with it. I've always thought maple fretboards look nice with koa, too. If I order another Carvin down the line some time, it might be pretty darn close to your's!
