Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 4!

It really shows every finger print and finger nail scratch.
None of the other Carvin pick guards would really look good on the walnut top. I'm thinking that a black pearl would look pretty good & not show smudges and scratches as bad but they don't offer that.

Any of you guys seen any walnut tops with the red tortoiseshell pick guard installed?

Anyone know of any custom pick guard companies that can produce a pick guard for the SB5001 in different colors/material? A clear pick guard on this one's just not my thing. The control plate just sticks out too much.

Flat black?

Were I in your shoes, knowing that no one currently makes pick guard for Carvins... I'd take it down to my man Freddy at the Repair Zone (best guy in SD). He'd create a template from the existing pick guard and make me a new one from what every color I picked. I've had him do this before, and he's very good at it...

Do you have someone in your area?

Flat black would probably look as good as the current gloss pickguard and it wouldn't show finger prints and scratches nearly as bad as the gloss.
Unfortunately there's no real great pick guard guys in the local area.

I'm also going to try the tortishell this weekend. It may surprise me and briing a little more vintage look to the bass.

That one is tempting for sure. I have a translucent pearl blue SB5000 coming in a few weeks. I called and talked to Carvin about it. They said the B series is slightly less punchy than the SB series in general and being an Ash body it would be a bit more scooped than Alder. So I think I am going to hold out for my SB and pass on that one. The 8.3 weight sure does sound nice though.

On a diff topic, in general do you have to change the nut when going from BEADG to EADGC tuning on basses? The Carvin tech told me this and I didn't realize that was required.

I do it on all my 5er's from time to time(and always have at least one bass in E-C tuning), and have never needed to change the nut.

Thanks Darkstrike, that was my understanding as well. First I'd heard of nut changes.

I'm really starting to give some thought to the "E-C/Hipshot D-Tuner/Octave pedal" combo my old bass instructor talked about. Seems like might be the best of both worlds sort of thing.

Yup, same with me - I've done the EADGC thing on 2 different basses and never had to do anything to the nut.

I know someone who strung his dowsky that way too and never had to modify the nut.

My Warwick was strung with piccolo strings for years and the adjust-a-nut worked fine on it as well (and those strings are super tiny).

Ive had to adjust the neck on mine once since Ive gotten it about 9 months ago, only because of a change of strings tht were highe tension. On another note, you can see some vids of me rocking my SB live here [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I can't get to that southpaw, but your post inspired me to put one up as well. I'm going back through the recording of last weekend's gig and making remastered mp3s of it. I thought I would post an excerpt from one song that I got called to do an improv blues solo:

The gear is an Alder SB5000 with maple board, DR HiBeams, Carvin BX500 into a SWR Golight 4x10 and Carvin BRN4-210. I wasn't going through the PA so this is just captured from a camera mic that was picking up the room mix.

hmmm that sucks might be because im posting it from an iphone, I'll upload from my PC tonight. Yours is sounding sweet btw! In any case you can go on facebook and search The Boogymen, there are plenty of vids there.

that's what i'm thinking.

also, what about ordering a 5 piece neck rather than a 1 piece?

i just talked to a carvin sells guy and he told me i should not have a problem with a 1 piece tung oiled neck due to the way their necks are made.
