Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 4!

As I imaptiently wait for my SB4000, I have to admit I am not suffering in the least, because I get to play this every day:

I know there are a fair number of people who don't think Carvin made a decent bass until the SB series came along. Well, all I can say is this LB70 has been my favorite bass since they day it was delivered to me in 2004.

It's going to be interesting to compare the new SB4000 to the LB70.

That's a beautiful bass. I'm definitely interested in your comparison when the SB4000 arrives.

On the E-C tuning topic, I ran into one of my old bass instructors today and he said he only tunes its 5-strings E-C now. And has an octave pedal for going lower on the rare occasions he needs too. I thought it was an interesting concept.

regarding specs (not listing the obvious from pics):

alder body
maple neck
active P/U's
controls: volume/blend/ low-high mid sweeps/ bass-treble
14 in. radius
stainless steel med/jumbo frets
nickel wound strings
weight: ???

PS...I thought all carvin necks would feel the same...this is much thinner than my AC50...

That is interesting - never thought of using an octave pedal to replace the B before. You can always install a Hipshot Droptuner on the E string too.

Another bonus - I bought a set of D'Addario 6-string bass strings and just never used the low B. They were very light gauge and allowed me to set the action ridiculously low.

I'm sure you can get any of the available Carvin headstocks, and even get them reversed if that's your thing. I like that headstock a lot. Good call!!!

As previously posted, my postcard date was 4/13. That day came and went with no notice, so I finally called to inquire on the 15th. They got back to me today with a one line Email simply stating that they would "try to have it done on Friday"

So for those in the wait... best case scenario looks to be at least 10 days late at this point.

Beautiful bass! Very classic looking.

Just put down my new SB5001. I still can't get over the playability and tone of these SB model basses. This thing just kills through the GB Max 9.2 and Berg HT12 cabinet. I'm starting to see why the vol/vol configuration is slightly preferred on the JJ basses too. You definitely seem to be able to get more subtle variations between the neck and bridge P/U (verses the blend).
These basses are definitely one of the best values out there.

So guys, while I'm totally digging the SB5001 with the walnut top, I'm totally bummed out about the gloss black pick guard.
It really shows every finger print and finger nail scratch.
None of the other Carvin pick guards would really look good on the walnut top. I'm thinking that a black pearl would look pretty good & not show smudges and scratches as bad but they don't offer that.

Any of you guys seen any walnut tops with the red tortoiseshell pick guard installed?

Anyone know of any custom pick guard companies that can produce a pick guard for the SB5001 in different colors/material? A clear pick guard on this one's just not my thing. The control plate just sticks out too much.



Let me know what you guys think.

:hmm: Not a bad idea Bill. As scratchy as it's already getting it couldn't hurt to try. I just wonder if I could get it to look consistant all over. I might give it a try.

I've done it to smaller pieces, truss rod covers and the like, and it's come out neat, I've seen a few TBers do it to whole black basses, but I figure, worst comes to worst, you're planning on ditching the guard anyway, you loose nothing but a little time.

This would be great. I would love an antique pearl guard. The white pearl from Carvin is so... white. I saw someone in this thread who got a custom truss rod cover, but haven't seen any custom pick guards. I wonder if Jeannie's would do one? He does a lot for the Lakland models. With so many folks playing the SB series someone should invest in the pattern or whatever is required to make after market guards.

I went to the Dallas Guitar show this weekend. I picked up some Sadowskys and Mike Lull's and they really didn't wow me that much in comparison to my SB5000. I didn't ask the prices on them I was just trying to compare product to product. I knew if I found out they were $2000 more than my bass I wouldn't have been as objective as I was trying to be. I didn't plug them in, but I listened to a friend playing one of the Sadowskys through a big Mesa combo and it sounded nice. Not run out and buy one nice or anything. It all once again made me happy with the SB stuff.

Also listening to the playbacks from this weekend's gig and my SB sounded nice in the mix, imo. Cool bass. I took a couple of solos and was able to easy hear it back in the mix just by increasing my attack. I really dig this bass. I think I want to ditch my Carvin BRN4-210 cab though in lieu of another SWR. The SB+BX500+SWR sound really rubs me right.
