Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Here is a recording from last night's gig where I was using my SB5000:

I was running direct pre out from my TC Electronics RH750, so its pretty much straight up direct SB5000 tone. In retrospect, I wish I would have gone post and put a little Tubetone in to give it a little more character, but the straight up SB sounds pretty good by itself anyway, imo. The cool thing is we didn't know we were being recorded. The soundguy came up afterward and said he recorded it and offered us a CD for $25, so we took it. I think he did a good job.

Someone please buy my sb4000 it's in the classifieds. I hate to part with it but I'm so broke! I'm sure I'll get light up for advertising it on this post but I'm a bit desperate.
Today was my estimated completion date and no shipping notice. Didn't really expect it but there is always that small shred of hope.
It would have had to ship today in order for me to have it for this weekend's gig since I'm in Ohio and they're in CA.
Can't complain I still have my other SB5000 to rock out on!

Sound good, SB5000 never sounded so good. Had two of them but that upper horn poke my little skinny butt.

Hey guys, I've got a recording of my SB5000, I've never posted an audio file before. How do I do that?
Here it is, first time uploading a song so I hope it works. This was recorded with my SB5000 right into a pre-amp in the studio.. its a rough mix..

I called Carvin today to ask about my bass since its estimated completion was 12/12. They said they are about 2 weeks behind schedule and at best they wouldn't be shipping my bass until the middle of next week. Glad I didn't get this as a Christmas present.
I understand that the date is just an estimate but it would be nice if they could set up there website with progress updates. Right now all it says is "In Process" and "Shipped." There's no indication of how far along they are until you get the shipping notice. These are great basses priced well so I guess I can't complain too much about it. At least I have one already!

If you where waiting for a A/C, Sadowsky, Fordera, you could turn that couple of weeks into a couple of months.

I have to say after spending a little time with a ash SB5000 this thing does the 70's J thing in spades.
I'm usually use Audere and Nordstrand in all my J basses. The Carvins SB series is pretty close to that tone (slight mid difference) and you need to boost the lows a touch can cop a Audere Low Z type of sound. (I only use the Low Z)
I thought for sure that I was going to change the pre and pickups on my Carvin once I had it, and I decided not to and leave stock. (I don't leave anything stock that includes my Modului and Rays).
Also I have to say that I'm not a fan of 19mm spacing and prefer a slightly tighter spacing (its what I'm used to, even on my 4s) however The neck on the SB feels real cozy with no issues what so ever in terms of playing. Carvin really nailed it with this one, Kudos to them and Sekou for knocking it out of the park.

Interesting... what 4's do you have that have tighter than 19mm spacing?
I'm betting that's due to the fairly shallow C profile of the neck. At least that's what makes it such a pleasure to play for me.

On my 4 string Js I use the Schaller 463 bridge with the adjustable saddle rollers. I pull it in a touch to 18.5 (I'm just used to that and it creates no issues over the pickups).
I agree the profile or the neck makes its easier for me as compared to other 5 strings 19mm basses that I have tried (However I'm not sure if the profile is the only factor or not in its ease of playing for Me).
I believe (but could be wrong) that the J99 pickups are not individual poles but rather a bar. So, if that's true, you could change the bridge to one that would get you the 18mm and there wouldn't be any issues with the pickups.
Ahhh, ok. And yeah, even with individual poles, that much variation won't hurt you (as you obviously know). It's usually more like if you try to push it to 17mm... it adds up.
I dug into this a while back and there's two schools of thought on string spacing when dealing with both 5's and 4's with the same player. One is to keep the neck feel roughly the same, which means typically a 17mm spaced 5 and the standard 19mm spaced 4. The other is to keep the string-string spacing the same, and let the neck vary. Back in the early days of 5's, the first approach was taken. I figure this also had to do with making manufacturing process as cost-efficient as possible. However, these days, I think keeping string-string spacing the same is most typically favored for players... even though it means the neck feels a lot more different.
Anyway, FWIW.
It could also be the fingerboard radius, I suppose, but I have smaller hands, so spacing is kind of a big deal to me too. That said, I'm ok with 19mm spacing, but it definitely makes it easier if the neck profile is thinner from front to back (like on the SB5000).

I love playing yours Fred, it was uber J like (if that makes sense).
Last night I was going back and forth with My Modulus FU J style 5 (which is 17mm) and the SB and it did was took a few seconds to adjust and at least 1 song to feel back at home on either instrument. On a MTD 19mm is felt like there was a lot more movement which felt odd (compared to what I was used to). Sorry Mods if this was derailing from the thread.
Back to topic...The SB5000 is the most comfortable 19mm 5 string that I have ever played.
I totally understand. It's a great sounding and playing instrument. It seems that no matter what amp I plug into, it still sounds great. I would like to get a 5 string version.
