Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Man... I put some DR HiBeams on this thing and I am in love. It's a keeper. Big vintage sounding bell tones, lower action than my SB5000. Can't wait to gig it this coming weekend.

Starting to wonder if a different pickguard might look better. What do y'all think? Kinda digging this tort guard:

Folks, the J99A pups in the SBs are, by far, the star of the show. My passive SB4000 will tell you straight-out that batteries are best left out of the bass and my SVT-7 PRO is more than willing to receive without. Going-green never felt so good!

Anybody order an SB5000 recently and get one shipped? I'm just curious if they're running ahead of schedule or not. My last one shipped about 2 days after the estimated date on the postcard which isn't too bad. Number is due to be completed on 12/12 but I was curious if they were shipping early right now. I have a gig on the 17th and would love to have it for that.

You can run the active versions without batteries with the electronics disengaged. Sounds great both ways. I don't use an amp anymore, I run direct with this bass and it sounds great!

They are running about a week behind. Mine was due 11/28 but will be ready by end of this week.

IME with Carvin through the years, depending on the options you choose, the production times can vary quite a bit. If one person gets their bass late, there may well be another person who ordered a bass configured differently who gets it early. Of course, you can expect that there will be a LOT of orders for Christmas this time of year, so late is probably more likely than early.

That's what I figured. My last bass was a lot fancier than this one so this one shoudln't cause problems but I doubt it will ship early.

This same bass showed up at my local GC (at the same price, too). WOW...AWESOME BASS!!!!! I see what all the fuss is about now. I'm wondering if the body is alder or ash and if it has single or stacked pickups. There was no hum when the pickups were soloed. I'm considering ordering one in another color combo.

String through body, active JJ, curly maple fretboard, metallic burnt orange body. Feels wonderful, sounds great too!

Some of you may have seen me whining about what my already awesome SB5000 lacked, well I fixed it!:hyper:
My complaints were: the bridge pickup was too bright and thin, and I wanted a passive mode/tone in addition to the sweepable mids.

I took it over to Carey Nordstrand's shop and they put a Big Single in the bridge position, and because it's a bit wider, moved it 3/16" closer to the neck (almost 60's position). They also put in a passive tone and passive mode, while keeping the mid control. :bassist::bassist::bassist:

I haven't had a chance to really try it out much but initial impressions are that I now have a lot of new darker/vintagey tones available, and the bridge pickup is now much thicker sounding, so I can get a nice warm fat jaco growl.
I'll post pictures later, and maybe samples if anybody is interested.

So, I now have 3-band eq with volume/blend, sweepable mids, passive mode, passive tone, and 60's-ish bridge pickup position. Awesome!

Hey can some of you guys compare the sb5000 neck shape to the sadowsky or, my favorite, Lull 5 string necks? I don't like how fat the sadowsky necks I've played are. I don't have an opportunity to play one of these before I would place my order.

I recently opened a show for a touring act where the bassist played an sb5000 on my rig and it sounded awesome. Too bad he was a lefty or I could have just tested his. Thanks.

The SB5000 neck is a shallower C profile than the Sadowsky or Lull. I think you'd dig it if those are just a little bit too "round" for you.

Send a message to Ed Friedland. He has an SB5000 and a couple of Lull 5's.
