Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Yep. My 4000 has become my primary bass, benching my P, and spawning the sale of my Stingray. It does it all and well.

I stopped by the Carvin store in San Diego tonight. I have a feeling I'm going to be seeing one of these in my hands again real soon. I need to decide what options I want. The prices are so good.

I think it's the best sounding passive jazz bass I've heard in a very long time. I would like to have a passive sb5000. I really don't think I'd miss the preamp, but as always I might just stick with "stock" for resale value.

If you go completely passive they charge you 50 extra and wont give you the 10 day return policy. :hmm:

Do not accept this. If you want something, talk to them. Tell them what you would like, I had a return option and my bass was pretty custom, hand picked flame koa, etc. Ask before ordering, make it clear you will not be stuck with the bass even though there are some custom options. Work with FLOCK, he can do things. He did a fantastic job with mine, everything from hand picking the Koa, designing it, etc. Merry Christmas to all.

exactly. I also noticed a considerable pop when switching from active->passive. I'm not sure if this is the norm, but I don't like it and I'm going to be going passive most of the time.

Flock is the salesman I was working with. He made it sound like it wouldn't be a problem at all. I have his card so I can just call him up and make sure to clarify everything up front. He was really great. I went in there with my family because we just happened to be in the area, and he put on a movie, entertained them, even gave them some cookies his mom had made!

Yeah, just run it in passive mode and you are good to go. Plus, in active mode the tone control still acts as a normal passive tone knob, which is a way cool feature! :cool:

There is an attenuator on the preamp and you can set it so that there is no noticeable difference in volume when you switch b/w active and passive.

I like the the active so that I can boost the bass a little.

I'm telling you Flock did me so right. He has to be the most real, caring salesman ever. Good on you for grooving with him. When you go back tell him the Forsythe bass is KILLER, and thank you very much for the work it took.

I have swamp ash and ebony board/flame koa SB5000. Killer sound. All of my semi-professional bass friends are really impressed with the sound and of course the look. Carvin gets some amazing flame koa. Check this thread for mine. Peace.

I know if I ever get another one it would be with the ash and ebony. I have enough Alder Js both graphite and wood.

One of my gigs is working out great with this and my obsessive personality will only go on for so long.

I'm thinking Black ash with the the burnt edges, no figured top, tort guard. (Kind of simple, but neat with the burnt edges).

Well apparently Carvin shipped my bass on 12/23 and it will arrive this Friday according to the UPS tracking information. I was surprised because I never got an e-mail saying it had shipped. I checked my spam box and everything and there is no evidence an e-mail was sent. When I logged into their website tracking, it showed it shipped. Weird. In any case, I'll post some pictures once it arrives.

For those of you who have ordered, you might want to just keep checking the website as it appears there might be a problem with the automated e-mail notification.

This might be a silly question, but if you order the 'Jet Black' wouldn't you already have a black back? (Asking out of ignorance since I do see that option, I'm assuming you would not need it if you ordered black or am I missing something...Which could easily be the case).

I guess I misunderstood your post. I thought you were going to get the natural ash with the black burst edges.

So, now to you . . . what do you mean by 'burnt edges'?

Do you mean a black stain and then the black burst edges?
