Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

That bass looks crazy good with the diamonds. I have an ebony fretboard so the diamonds were just not in the running. Sweeet looking bass though.
First, let me just state that I LOVE the look of these things...however...does anyone else think the headstock is going the wrong way?
I just think that a reverse version of that headstock would just flow and fit better with that body. I actually contacted Carvin and they said they can do it but they need payment upfront and no returns....has anyone ever done this? I'd love to see it.

DO NOT LET THEM hold you to this! They will help you if you talk to them. I got a discount on all kinds of stuff, and then they tried to tell me no returns(because it was super custom=hand picked woods and personal arrangements) and I said heck no! Heck no. And they agreed to give me my 10 day return policy. And then after 10 days I returned the beast and two hours later went back and got it. Love this bass, and LOVE Carvin.

Could you elaborate on that? What happened? Why did you return it? Why did you go back and re-purchase it?
This was my first bass, costing so much, didn't really know Carvin, playing electric etc, and my wife was being non-committal about whether she was alright or whatever. I'm kinda nutty when it comes to returning stuff unfortunately. Just a reality I guess, or was then. Anyway. After driving thirty minutes to return it on the last day of returns, two hours later I told my wife we were going back, talked to Flock, (who actually already had a dude who was wanting to see it), went back and re-bought it for the same price. Simple.
6 weeks after getting my SB5000 - from WhirledPeas - I bought the SB4000 kickboxr had for sale on TB. can be seen here:

I like my SB5000 so much - couldn't resist getting a 4 stringer. Should be to me by Monday.

I've been following this thread for a while and I finally caved in and made the call.
Kept it simple and Ed worked with me on the price a bit. Came in at an even grand, and that's darn good for a bass this amazing.
I gotta say thanks to all you guys and everything you've posted, it really helped me come to (what I hope will be) a great decision to buy a Carvin.

Congrats, hope you dig it. After playing some $3000 Will Lee Sadowskys this past weekend, I am shocked at what a good instrument Carvin is putting out for $1000. I would take an SB4 over the Sadowskys I tried out.
I've been playing fenders as by main 4 stringers for a while and have tried several "super jazz" style basses over the years. I've liked the tone of several of them, but never thought they were worth the big bucks they cost. I'm ready to retire my marcus miller jazz to the studio only (11.5 lbs) and I need something that will come in light (relatively) that will still supply a great JB tone. From everything you guys have said, this is it. I have mild trepidation regarding the slightly larger neck, but I've always been equally at home on a P as a J, I think it should feel pretty nice.
Has anyone done a real a/b comparison of the H50s vs the J99s? I got the J99s because of all the sterling reviews, but I hadn't read much on the H50s.

Yes, someone did a comparison video early on. The J99A's sounded better to most listeners. Trying to remember the guy's name. Maybe Kaycee? Think its on YouTube. But the general consensus among folks I've talked to including the Carvin sales guys is go with the J99As unless you specifically know you need a humbucker.
The first company to come out with really convincing single coil tone in a humbucker will make millions. Too bad physics seem to be standing in the way.

I think thats the first time I've ever really liked a pearloid pickguard. Thats razor sharp man, absolutely beautiful.
Yeah, it's REALLY hard to beat the single coil tone... split coils come as close as anything since they're still single-sensing, but the hum canceling does affect tone. No free lunches.
IMHO, you did choose wisely. The J99A's are just magic. I love'm.
