Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Hey wow thanks guys!
I can't believe how great this bass sounds and looks!
When I first saw pics of 'Carvins new SB range' a couple of years ago, I couldnt believe how ugly the things were.
What has bought me around is just the amazing variety of woods/finishes/hardware etc etc.
It was one VERY similar to grateful's 5000 that I saw in the classifieds recently (the sale where the guy had 10 basses to sell) that got me hooked.
Now I even love the SB headstock!
You can really make the bass your own. Now looking through other music shops/websites is a complete bore - coz I cant really choose a thing!
I love how the bass can go from retro vintage cool to uber modern.
I have to say though that I am particularly loving the finished (or oiled!) wood tops and bodies.

That bass from the classifieds IS the one I bought. I made it my own by just ordering a couple of parts straight from Carvin that dropped right in. It's a great way to build and mod basses IMHO. I'm still blown away at how great they play and sound.
Hey guys, I've been a drummer my entire life and have dabbled in various other instruments off and on but I've decided to get serious about the bass. I recently bought a Squier Classic Vibe 60's P bass to get started on but I have since made up my mind to jump in with both feet and get a quality instrument that looks and sounds great. I've always had a thing for Carvins so after looking at just about every brand and model offered, I've come back to the SB4000 or 5000. I also like the Icons but I'm leaning toward the classic look of the SB. For two days I've been putting together different combos on their website and I am having a heck of a time deciding on colors and top woods. At the moment I am leaning toward translucent red or blue with a white pearloid pickguard, but I really like the figured walnut...maybe with a tobacco or black burst. This may be one of the toughest choices I've had to make lately....

It's really purple. For the right gig, it's awesome. For the wrong one, it's terrifying. Depends on the player and the gig.
That's my sentiment almost exactly. The purple bass is ALMOST there for me. It looks like they have discounted it a little but I really, really want a birds eye fretboard and I'm not so sure about the black hardware on the purple. If it had chrome hardware and the fretboard I want, I would buy it.
Ok, here is what I came up with. I like the flamed maple look but I decided to eliminate that and see if I could keep the price from going too crazy. I may add the flamed top but for now I am thinking I like the idea of translucent blue over the swamp ash body. Since I am relatively new to basses, let me know if you see any "must-have's" that I missed or anything of concern on the build list.
Here is another twist on that purple one.....I think building one in trans purple with a white pearloid pickguard, birdseye maple fretboard and an unpainted birdseye maple headstock might tone the color way down and be just the right amount of "bright". On a side note....I have gotten absolutely zero actual work done today because I've been surfing the web all day.
Well, it's gonna be just a little while longer before I can join the SB club. I just came across a good deal on a Stingray 5HS that I scooped up. I still plan on ordering an SB but I'm not in as big of a hurry as I was. After looking at them the last couple of days, I really like flamed maple with either Honey Burst, Deep Orange Burst, or Deep Red.
Why no 'P' pickups from Carvin?
I gotta tell ya, after playing my SB5000, the urge to get another one and drop a P/J set up in there is almost overwhelming. Dang, these are fine playing basses!

Personally, I prefer the electronics as they are, with separate volumes and a tone control. But that's just me. Usually I opt for bone/Tusq nuts, but the standard graphite one seems to be working out just fine for me. A black pickguard might look nice as an option. But that's one of the many great thengs about Carvins: You can just order one later.
I'd rock it for sure! Looks like it will be a nice one!
