Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 6!

Here's a good question (at least, I think it is).
Is your SB your primary bass or is it just another tool in your kit?
If it is your primary, what bass is your second choice?
If it's not your primary, what bass beats it?

My SB5000 is fretless, so it's basically a play-at-home toy. I love it, though. It's a blast to play, and it feels and sounds great. A fretless is never going be my main bass, but I like having one around.
My #1 bass is a 5-string Fender Am. Std. P-bass, which is just a great instrument in every respect. When I need a 4-string, I've got my good 'ol, semi-hollow USA Reverend Rumblefish from the first year they made them. That and the P-bass are the two best basses I've owned, out of nearly 50.

BTW, I think the icon headstock looks cool, and in reversed position fits the SB's pretty well.

Indeed, but most choose the standard icon head. I think it looks better (more balanced design-wise) with it reversed like you chose.

I thought in the post a couple back you stated it was satin.

I did not know what I had until I actually went to the one piece of ID I have for the particulars of this bass, the actual tag they used to make it. It is signed by all the guys who put it together, and after working through the various build codes, I realized satin was out, as if satin it be, then tung oil it would as well. And I said no to tung oil. My apologies.

Not a problem. I thought it looked a little shiny but I figured you could have polished it up real good.

I've been wondering if the solid colors in a satin finish might look good (sort of older looking).

Solid colors look great in matte! (IMHO)

Here are a few satin guitars from the carvin forums. The first is red and it looks really, really good. I would love to see this on an SB.

Batteries dead after 4 days?? Seems strange. I tried re-seating them. Anyone hear of SBs with an issue where the preamp doesn't turn off/drains batteries?

At least it sounds great passive!

I ALMOST bought the bass on the spot. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that I could customize one to my specs through Carvin. It was hard walking away from that bass at the show, but I did. I called Carvin as soon as they opened and ordered one. Got there a couple of months later and I have been playing them ever since.

Did the one you ordered blow you away or do you regret not buying the bass at the show?

It was just as good. Little heavy though. I sold it and got a second one once Carvin brought the weights down a little.

I had this problem with a different brand. What happens is that the prongs on the input aren't separated enough. Take it out and look at it. You just need to bend them a little more open. That should be the fix.

Here is my Satin finished SB5000. Spalt over Ash. Has a flame maple board on a mahogany neck with matching headstock. Tung oil on neck and board.

That's a beautiful spalted top. How is the mahogany neck? I've always wondered about those.
