Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 6!

I checked out ArticT thread and I'm looking at these other satin finishes and its killing me. They look awesome.

I wonder if my wife will let me order a fretless now? :rollno:

I saw someone in another thread that handled GAS with a system where for every hour of practice they gave themselves a dollar.

I should set up an arrangement like that, I might end up with a fretless B-50 instead if I did that.

Could save about 300 hours in the woodshed.

I would compare Carvins satin finish to Fodera. I've owned 3 Foderas, so I can attest to that statement. As for the top woods, I think it's important that you develop a salespersons trust to help pick out what you want. I specifies lots of "flame and figure" and got what I wanted. The mahogany neck was something I thought would go well with the spalt. Looking back I wish I had went with maple for stability, but it sounds pretty much the same and looks incredible.

I will say that I plan on replacing the pickups. They sound ok, but really noisy. I may try Carvins humbucking pups, but probably will go with Aguilar or Sadowsky pups with a Sadowsky Pre. Adds $400 to my investment, but still comes under $2000, half the price of a custom USA Sadowsky, and with about 4 months less wait time. These Carvins are no brainers. Just wish the 5 string neck profile was a little beefier. Also, I'm not a fan of the bridge. May swap for a Hipshot. This is all nitpicky stuff. The simple stock no frills SB 4 or 5000 is a fantastic, professional tool that suits beginner to pro.

Just order a pre-drilled fretless neck from Carvin. It swaps right out. I did that with a B50 I own and it is amazing.

If you have the J99A's that's certainly not normal for the SB series. You should work with Carvin to determine why your bass is more noisy than normal. If you know you want to replace them anyway, then its a non issue I guess. But noisy J99A's are certainly not the norm on these basses. They are among the more quiet singles out there, ime.

I plan on getting one more SB fretless and ordering a B50 with no pickup routes so I can make a PJ out of it. Alder Body with Rosewood board, maple neck, probably chambered, sunburst finish, chrome hardware, vintage Fender SS frets. Also really wish the would do 12" radius. 14 is a little flat for me.

@Jarrett. I do sessions and live work in Nashville and (any) noise is unacceptable, when your on in ears or under a producers microscope. If I were just pumping through an SVT or B15 and going for pure tone, it would be different. They sound fine, typical single coil hum, just won't work for my needs.

If 14" radius is a little flat for you, why did you order it? 12" is standard, and they even do a 10". I went with the 10". 14" is definitely too flat for me, and I think 12" is even flatter than I would generally prefer. However, if they only offered 12" or even 14", I would still have ordered one. These basses are pretty sharp.

One advantage of the Carvin humbuckers is that they are the correct size. Carvins pups are both standard Fender bridge size. If you order from someone else, I'd order two bridge size pups even though it will probably be more expensive than a standard set.

FWIW, I really like the H50 Carvin pups. :)

Some good things happened and I am just a few decisions away from ordering a SB4k. I can't frickin decide on a color combo for starters. I like the classic white with the tort and the maple. I like the black/black with the maple. I like the 3TS with the black and maple. Lastly I like the red/black/maple. So,I think I have settled on maple for my FB but not close on body color and hardware color. Any pics of these combinations to help sway me are welcomed.

Black/black being borin matey. Arrghh! What ye wants is a right interesting bit of bass P0rn for this har thread! Come with some original or by my arghh, it don't belongs in yer chest! Arghh.
