I think I've seen at least one SB P/J out there. Looks really cool and I'm thinking of doing a similar thing. I've got a B50 getting routed for a P only (hopefully finishing this week!).

Really wish Carvin would offer a rear cavity as an option, especially for those who don't order the pick guards. That electronics plate looks out of place to me when there's not a pick guard to tie it in with.

Normally I don't have a problem with a Jazz bass with the floating control plate. I think it looked good enough for Jaco, and it works on a Fender just fine. However, this carvin has a unique shape that just screams for rear routing and no PG.
I also think there should be a PG option for the B40/50.

Yep. Pet peeve of mine is a Jazz plate w/no guard. I think it would be OK if the jazz plate was rounded or some other shape that makes it look 'complete' as a standalone. For me, it always looks like something is missing, regardless of manufacturer.

This actually brings up a good point. Do you think the SB will be the Carvin that finally warrants "aftermarket" options. Would custom pickguards, control plates, or knobs be something to lookk forward to?

That B50 is just beautiful. If only it had the low wide frets. Also wondering if it would look better with black hardware.

My SB5000 was supposed to ship on Leap Day, but isn't supposed to ship until this week now. It should look almost exactly like the Hugh McDonald (Bon Jovi) bass. Options-wise, I got the 5-piece all maple neck (hoping for the extra stability here in MI), alder body. Can't wait. My G&L L2000 has the quartersawn neck and can't believe how stable that thing is.

Speaking of the Hugh bass, his SB5000 has the 1/4" output on the front control plate, must be passive.

I used to find it a little odd to but now my main 4 string Js don't have them at all now and I think I gotten used to it.

The only other Jazz bass I have owned was a Geddy sig and I ripped the white guard off of it as soon as I got it. I grew quite fond of a Jazz with no pickguard then, and have been ever since.

So naturally, I ordered my SB5000 with no guard.

What makes the SBs different to you, as compared other J basses?

They are just better to me in almost all ways.

Pros:
PRICE! Made in the US and a 1/3 of the price of its peers
SB5000 neck profile is greatness
J99A + VVT electronics = dang near perfect tone
Active and passive options with passive tone control
Fit and finish is better than any Fender I've picked up
Ability to customize bass to specs
Ergonomics are really nice, very playable
Bass and Treble boost AND cut

Cons:
Weight - they just weigh to much
Carvin QA - the basses ship with more minor flaws than they need to
Doesn't sound exactly like a Fender (for some I could see this being an issue)
Waiting 6-8 weeks to get such an awesome bass custom made

I had them on my SB5000 and have them currently on my B25P. I string them through body. The Carvin ferrule seems to be one of the few that is shallow enough to allow it. I've had them strung on all my Carvins at one point or another for months at a time with no issues or breakage. And they sound amazing...
