Yeah, but it wouldn't be in the traditional position for a p pickup, which is between the Jazz pickup postions.

well, the p pickup is not actually between the J pickup positions. It is a split pickup though, so there is some filling to be done to makeup for half the pickup anyway. You would fill the Jazz rout and make a new rout for the P pickup. This is what a good luthier would do.
The P-bass pickup is actually pretty close to the neck route for a J bass, it is not in the in between position.
This does come back to the 'carvin should offer a p-pickup' scenario though. If they offered it it wouldn't matter.

It will...and it won't. The locations are the same, but since the p-bass pickup is split and the J bass is a solid bar, when you rout over the J pickup rout it won't be a clean p rout.

Of course it won't. But, if you get a new unrouted pickguard, you can route it for the p pickup and hide the extra space.

But carvin doesn't sell unrouted pickguards for the SB. So now you have to get a blank pickguard have have one made.

I truely hope Carvin is developing a split coil P-bass type model. I'd have them build me at least two or three.

But I hope they do it right: and...

1) Design a true P-bass split coil model, without a jazz pickup.

2) Design a traditional split coil configuration. None of this reversing the split coil stuff. No disrespect or offense, Grateful. But I love the traditional alignment.

3) Design the spli coils and their covers to be standard size, so we can experiment with different Split Coils, should we choose to do so.

They can offer the "PJ" option, for those who want the "PJ" type basses. But I do not like "PJ" basses.

I like my P-basses to be strictly P-basses and my Jazz basses to be strictly Jazz basses.

Carvin is pretty great about their options. I'd bet that if they developed a split coil pickup you'd have the option of it alone or with a J pickup in the bridge (maybe even that massive H5 humbucker they have).

I tell ya, my B50 P bass is my go-to fretted flatwound bass now. Carvin feel and playablity, P-bass tone goodness.

Sorry for the blurry iPhone pic ... here it is. What you can't see is the beautiful lightly flamed ash body. Really a great looking, sounding, and playing (though it could maybe use a PLEK or A+ quality fret level) bass.

Only other criticism is I'd prefer maybe 10% more meat in the neck profile.

I'm wanting my next bass to have blocks as well. But I agree with puremetal33...black blocking would be an awesome (and seemingly easy) option for Carvin to consider....

For me, it's all about the Balanced sets. They assemble sets based on tension, not consistent gauge differences. So instead of having a 5 string set at .130 .105 .085 .065 .045. you may have a set that runs .130 .098 .073 .055 .039. All the strings feel the same when you play across them. It also means no overly bright or twangy G strings. Not that there's aamything wrong with twangy G strings (on the right person).

Right, I should have said the routing EXTENDS back between the standard Jazz locations.

What they mean is that they make strings that enable you do do ridiculously low tunings. I think they offer a .250 string.... They also offer piccolo-type strings that are really small gauged.

I ignore all those and go straight the the .136 balanced set.

AMong the smoothest of any nickels I've felt. I don't use stainless due to feeling too rough. These are great.

I don't miss binding at all. Usually just leads to problems (shrinkage, separation) down the road anyway. The blocks I think look cool without binding.
