Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 8!

How does the MM pickup compare with the Jazz? I am thinking about getting an SB4000 with a MM/J set-up.

It nice if you don't need the treble, I feel it tame the treble so that not to produce strings noise. its warmer than the single. I installed a toggle switch to switch from dual to single.

Its the H50A. This is one of the first SB5000.

The grain on the one on the right is absolutely perfect.

Thats ashbody and the grain is pretty. Actually thinking of selling it as having two seems selfish lol.

As much as I love this bass, is anybody else disappointed with passive mode? It sounds killer in active, but when I switch it, it just seems to me like the life gets sucked right out of the bass. The tone doesn't please me and the volume drops something fierce. In active mode, it's hard to beat this bass. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

I prefer the active mode on both my SB5000 and PBJ4 to the passive mode. But others really like the passive mode and sometimes order passive only versions of the basses.

They have a trim pot to make the volume the same in the cavity... have you tried that?

Going off of that, maybe I just need to twist the knobs some more until I can find that. I've messed with them but not enough to cure my passive blues on this bass.

You can get the active/pasive volumes similar, but even at the same volume, I find the active mode to be more appealing.

And maybe it's just my ears. Cause on my G&L in that same picture, I could be satisfied with both active modes but that passive mode is music to my ears. So, maybe it's just meant to be for me that the SB runs active only. I'm just making sure I'm not overlooking something.

I'm looking into having a Carvin built in the next couple months. I've be researching them & noticed that they're using the same bridge that I installed on my P-bass...for like $16. The bridge is solid, but I figured they would have gone with a brand name like Hipshot or BadAss...

They offer hipshot on another model. You might be able to get that as an upgrade now.

Personally if the active \ passive volume is way off & not able to be trimmed equal I will be returning mine for a full active version without a doubt.

Thats why I love my Sterling 5 HH so much, all 5 settings same volume plus the EQ. A beast live, easy to dial in for cover bands...

G&L 2500 was a HUGE difference active passive. Same for Big Al & Reflex HH
