Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

Did two gigs this weekend and I wanted to compare my Carvin SB5000 to my new Dingwall Combustion. I took the Dingwall to the Saturday gigs and wasn't to happy with the tone at all. It was missing that low end so Sunday I took the Carvin and with the amp set the same I was breathless, the SB5000 sound so much better and had a fuller round sound to it. So I guess I'll be using my Carvin to gig with and the Dingwall for pactice.

I ordered the SB4000 about 2 weeks ago. Ash body, flamed maple top, honeyburst with matching headstock. Birdseye fretboard, low wide frets and the 10" radius (if they offere a 7.5" I would have gone for that). If I really like it when it gets here, I'm thinking of getting a fretless version. I would really like to hear some clips of a fretless SB4000 or 5000. For the fretless I'm leaning toward a mahogany body with a koa top.

My new SB4000 arrived yesterday...eight days before it was even supposed to ship (thanks Carvin). Basically, I wanted one just like the spalted maple one in Carvins image gallery and catalog...but with an ebony fretboard and active electronics. Here it is:

I know, I know...I probably should have vacuumed my rug before taking the pics...but oh well.

Thanks. It's just blackburst edges over a spalted maple top.

As far as the tone goes, I've only been able to play it for a few minutes at low volume through my Ampeg Micro VR and so far it sounds great. However, I have a couple of gigs this weekend so that will be the real test. I'm thinking the SB4000 played through a Carvin B2000 amp is gonna' sound pretty sweet.

Hey folks. I saw Bon Jovi last night at the new Giants Stadium. Hugh McDonald played an SB5000 the ENTIRE night. I've seen them about four other times throughout recent years, and Hugh has always changed basses at least a few times during a show. Thought you proud owners would like to hear......

Those of you who own a SB5000 with the single coil pu's..... is it true that single coil pu's have less bottom end than the stacked humbucker pu's that Carvin also offers as an option.

I'm asking because I once swapped out the humcancelling pu's out of one of my basses and had single coils installed. My repairman told me before I had this done, and sure enough he was right......much less bottom end. I had him put the humcancelling pu's back in. Anyone else experience this?

Ive got TONS of bottom end in mine. The preamp gives me all the low end that I need.

Hey Dirty Dave! After your gigs this weekend with your new SB4000, could you let us know about:

any weight issues,
any soloed pickup noise (if those are J99A's you've got in there),
any body design issues (is your SB comfy standing and sitting? Any upper horn digging into chest issues?).

I've never heard of such a thing... :eyebrow:

I once owned a 1992 Carvin LB70 that had a pair of the earlier-generation stacked humbuckers. I never considered them particularly more deeply voiced than any single coils I've ever played. But I did consider them noticeably weak and flabby in overall output - definitely NOT to be played in passive mode, but only with a good onboard preamp instead... :hmm:

Jarrett - thanks for finding that youtube video! Kaycee, thanks for going to all the work to put that together!!! I believe that was a very excellent comparrison - about the best you could do..

I found the pickups to be quite similar, however the H50a's sounded slightly growlier with a slight bit more top end and a very very slightly less bottom end (only noticeable to me on the slap portion.)

I actually was really surprised by the h50a's! It seems like the tonal difference could easily be made up by slightly adjusting onboard tone control or bass/treble.. Plus you get a dead quite bass..

My SB5000 is about 10 days away... if the hum is too much, i'll probably order up a set of the H50a's.
