Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

I didn't mean that the preamp was too subtle. I meant that it is a nice addition to an already great sounding bass. I would order the active/passive set up. That way you really get 2 basses in one. In passive mode you still have a tone control and active you have bass and treble boost/cut.

Why order just passive when for $60 more you can get a killer active pre in addition to the passive feature?

I see were you comming from, I got both but love the passive more so because it's really pickup the notes more clearly IMO.

Saw this posted on the Carvin forum today:

"i removed the control plate on my sb4000 and turned down the trim pot (internal volume control) to match the output of the passive mode and ...jualla... no bass distortion and no amp clipping. there is a blue box on the circuit board with a phillips screw head. put the bass in passive mode,strike a string then put bass in active mode and adjust screw on blue box till sound is equall with passive. easy as pie,took 3 minutes and improved sound dramatically. sounds amazing and clear."

Thought I was pass this along for those concerned about the hotness of the SB pickups.

Well, what if you wanted to have a different preamp installed? Different P'ups even?

The 5000's I've played sounded great - but we all know how THAT is - I'd need to side-by-side it with a few other basses to really decide what I dig... But my gut tells me that I'd want to buy the passive rig, were I buying to day. Besides - there *is* an upside to going passive, ya know...

I don't know what the upside would be to going just passive would be when you have a bass that has a preamp that you can completely bypass and also a passive tone control in that passive mode - you're playing a completely passive bass, right?

What would the upside of having only a passive option be when you could have both...

Just ordered a lefty SB5000 in ferrari red with white pickguard. Swamp ash body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard with pearl blocks, and chrome hardware. I dedcided to add the metal pickup cover even though Ill probably end up taking it off. Sgonna be sweet ;)

Yeah I cant wait. Only came to like $1049 with case. I recently came into some money and knew I had to let some GAS go. It's also the first 5er Ill have ever owned. I love me some low b but Ive never had enough to actually buy a quality one that is offered left handed. The wait is going to kill me. :hyper:

Sounds like it will be a nice bass, congrats!

I'm finally getting ready to place the order for my SB5000 later today. I've been looking at the SB's since Carvin first released them. I've seen every video and every post on every thread, so it will be nice to finally get the ball rolling. I don't think the wait will be too bad for me since I have been looking at this bass for almost a year now, what's two more months;)

Hey all,

I posed the question a little while back: "now that you've had your SBs for weeks or months, how do you still like them"... I had a chat with talkbasser SMITCAT who owns a badass Black/Black SB5000 with birdseye maple neck.. He sent me this response and link to a tune he just recorded with the SB5000. Great tune, Great playing and great tone, nice guy too!!.. I got his permission to post this.

"I am still extremely happy with the bass. It has become the only one that I use. I needed to get used to the glassy modern quality that it has, but I absolutely love it. I've got a few live recordings, but nothing short and easy to send. I did record a couple of songs with it on my bands upcoming album, and one of them is up on our myspace page. Check out the top song, moving on."

The wait starts now. I just placed my order for the SB5000.

I called to place my order since I wanted to talk to an actual Carvin rep about the weight of this bass, which is my only real concern. The sales rep said that the weight issue is getting blown out of proportion, and that they don't vary that much between bass to bass. He did say that there is more wood on the SB than on the Icon for example, so there would be more weight. However, I'm sure some of the weight concerns on this bass can be validated through various owners, while some may have been blown out of proportion. I requested that they select a lightweight body blank and he said they would do it...we'll see. I would really hate to wait 8-9 weeks for this bass only to have it weigh 10.5-11 lbs. The spec'd 9.5 lbs. on Carvin's site is manageable.
