There goes the need to switch to active mode at the amp. Can't you just turn down the volume on the bass to eliminate distortion or clipping? That's what I usually do with my active basses. What am I missing?

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

There goes the need to switch to active mode at the amp. Can't you just turn down the volume on the bass to eliminate distortion or clipping? That's what I usually do with my active basses. What am I missing?
Sometime while playing you want to switch mode and if your active is much louder than it's a distraction, If you in active and your battery going bad you don't have to worry about a sudden volume drop plus your setting on the amp can stay the same for both passive and active.
Ahh...well there is the difference. I never had the urge to switch from active to passive while playing a gig. I guess I replace my batteries often enough that I have never had one die on me at a gig either. It sounds like you take your gigs much more seriously than I do. If the only thing that goes wrong over the course of the night is battery failure and being distracted by a temporary volume drop...then my gig was still a success LOL.
Just wanted to chime in and complement all you owners on a great instrument. I finally got to play one of these yesterday and I was blown away plain and simple. Though I live/work very close to the Santa Ana, CA store I haven't really paid attention to Carvin basses since I sold my '00 LB76 3 years ago, convinced that they were good for the money but not necessarily good (quality and woodwork were always top notch but the electronics just didn't do anything for me). But the SB changes the game in a huge way, IMO. I played 2 4 strings (1 passive Alder/Rosewood and 1 active Ash/Maple) and a 5 string (active Alder/Rosewood w/ 2-band EQ) and all were incredible. Liked them so much I came back today after work for more.
Never really been a big fan of their amps and cabs either but all 3 SB's thru a B1500/410/115 stack was quite heavenly.
I am seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on the 5 string, but then a 4 sounds tasty also.

To each his own when it come to how we play and set up our gear. I do switch sometime in songs to active to get more punch and yes I do take my gigs seriously.LOL
It wouldn't bother everyone, I guess, but it would bug the heck out of me.That's why the trim pots are there, to eliminate just such a problem. I want the full range of the volume on my bass to be usable.
Carvin must be making a killing on the SB's everyone wants one. I'm glad it a USA manufacturer.
Well I'm glad Carvin appears to be stepping it up with the SB series because after selling off my four LB70's one by one....I feel like I'm supposed to have one.
Mine is scheduled to ship in 2 weeks (5/28).

I've had mine since mid December '09 and have played a ton of live gigs and recordings with it and I can honestly say that I'm as blown away now as I was when I first played/heard the SB5000! The tone is serious and the feel is amazing!

Carl, I think it's your YouTube video that selling so many of the SB's. Carvin should be sending you some royalties
It is a nice clip though...I've probably watched it a dozen times now.

Actually, these basses are selling themselves! If they were not so great, the word would get around fast! IMHO, Carvin did an amzing job on these basses!

I went to the Carvin Santa Ana, CA store yesterday and tried a SB5000. There were also a few other players there checking out the same bass. Wanted to see and hear what all the hype was about. Yes, the SB5000 is killer! They have a winner here! GO CARVIN!
Did you get to try out the other Carvin models and if so, how did they compare to the SB5000?
No, just that one yesterday. I really like it. You can get a lot of different tones. The slap tone on it is killer, along with fingers over the bridge pu. Quite a versatile bass.

So how good is the stock preamp on these babies? Any issues, such as with the previous version of the LB preamp? Or has Carvin finally worked out those bugs?

Quiet as a church mouse, Nice pre-amp but the Treble/Bass stack don't have a smooth feel to it IMO.
