As for the un-nice things to say, I'm not too sure the controls in that spot would serve me well. I move a lot when I play, and me thinks I'd be hitting those knobs on a regular basis, unintentionally.

I need eleven extra dollars laying around maybe I should start a kickstarter.

Seriously though if you make the assumption that everyone has the same taste as you (playing by the neck with a pick and digging pointy things) your designs are going to fail which I think is what we're seeing here.

When you design something, anything, if wish it to appeal to an audience you must design it for them and not yourself.

If you watch the video at the link in the op, David Certain, the designer, doesn't play that way.

More efficient? So, instead of moving down to the controls, then back up.....you now move up and over to the controls, then back over and down to playing position. If this was any sort of actual benefit the bass market would have been flooded with controls on top decades ago. Design aesthetic, nothing more.

If the contact points are the same on both basses, why will one have "much better balance" than the other? Clearly, neither the 2+2 headstock, nor the headless one, are traditional Jazz bass contact points. Doubtful any one will think the Svelte is going to "function and feel" like a Fender bass, vintage or otherwise.

Beyond that, what Hendrix did with a Strat has nothing to do with how anyone plays bass. Irrelevant name dropping.

My fave features? The sharp-edged body (saves on router bits), and the "lifted" pickguard to make room for the control knobs. Classic stuff.

Do you work for the guy or something? You seem very defensive of any negative comments about his designs, work, playing.... anything. What gives? People don't seem to like the design. Give him all of your money and leave us alone. :thumbsup:

Seriously, the design is not my thing at all. His presumptive attitude kills it for me though. He almost acts as though if I don't "get" what he's going for then I'm somehow stupid. Good for him for trying something different. But this design seems thrown together and his "pitch" did nothing for me.

That's hardly praise. When it comes to bass makers, batting 500 in the customer service department is very low on the totem pole.

I have no connection with David Certain, other than having had a couple of e-mail exchanges with him, in which he responded as I would have expected any reasonable merchant to do. Other Talkbass members seem to have had positive experiences with him. If you don't like my postings in this regard, feel free to ignore them.

Brad Johnson once pointed out that those controls look like Garfield eyes- I've never been able to unsee that since.

I initially thought the same thing, but after reading up about the guy people say that he makes basses from parts. Maybe now he's looking to start building from scratch.
