I'm not convinced this is a functional prototype. I'm not sure you can actually tune it. The tuners look like they are probably bound in place by the headstock. That D string isn't in the best of shape, either.
I was wondering that too, but in the video it looks like they just clear. The above pic looks like that because they're using a wide angle lens up close.

In any case, the E and A tuners have a washer to allow the undersized bushings to secure the tuner properly in the vintage-drilled holes.
The D and G didn't require a washer because the holes were drilled the correct size from the beginning.
If it were me, I'd have used washers on the D and G to ensure symmetry, or MUCH more likely, I would have used tuning machines designed specifically for bass.

Makes sense, I just couldn't tell for sure with the pics I could find.

As far as the controls go, I think using a Jaguar-style upper bout controls would look more elegant with no loss of the desired functionality:
FWIW, and to provide a little balance, David built me a Jazz with ash body, maple board, his special design and ever-so-functional varitone, and a flip-flop metallic orange finish.
Badass. One of the nicest basses in my sizable collection. My bandmates just about cream themselves when they hear it.
David has no shortage in the stones department, he's a pretty confident and experienced dude, and that rubs some folks the wrong way. As with so many things on TB, he got razzed rather unfairly here IMO, probably more from the mob mentality taunting than anything he did wrong (here on TB? never...), and he lashed back. So yeah, you'll see some hateful and defensive posturing. I'm not sure he even logs in anymore. Our loss. If you're a straight shooter and know what the hell you're talking about, it's not hard to build a rapport with him that pays off in spades when he goes to build you a bass.
As for the new design, it's great to see him stretching out beyond his impressive Fender clones. I wish him all the best with it.

I take back my wishing him well. Anyone who could possibly write something like that is someone I would never EVER want to have any dealings with. I initially wished him well, but I take that back. I don't wish him harm, but I don't wish success on people who have no respect for others, especially their potential customers.
Hey David. I live in NY. I've played with lots of people. Some of them you may have even heard of. Search me out anytime you'd like. I've been a member of talkbass since it's early days. I don't want to and have no desire to hurt you, but if I and other talkbassers had nicer feelings towards you ohhhhhh how wonderful things could be for you and your bass building business. Do a search for "beat buddy" and look into David Packouz's attitude towards the people at talkbass. I believe it served him really well.
Oh whell... only thing this thread has made me CERTAIN of is that I would never buy one of his basses. Funny how easy a name to remember that is.
The power of talkbass... somebody may soon need to buy another fly swatter.

Well, I don't see me buying one of these, but I was curious about one thing. The pink proto has a conventional bridge with tuners on the headstock, and the raw wood proto had tuners at the bridge. (Pic didn't show the entire neck.) With a downsized body, I guess the only way to get it to balance well would be making the body thicker, or going headless. (Edit: the room light tricked my eye about the color. The conventional is blonde, not pink.)
I've got no dog in this fight, but maybe the reason he's looking to raise $25K is for the wood inventory, not just the machinery. There was something about fancy woods in the kickstarter copy.

The Kickstarter is to fund 20 basses for him to keep, sell, or give away to third party endorsers.
