Changing strings

absolutely agree you don’t want to have twisted strings. The good news is that bass strings are hard to twist. For example, hold the string with both hands between both thumbs and index fingers and try to twist it.

What you do need to do, is to make sure the ball is seated properly in the tail piece seat, and not having too many or too little windings on the tuning pegs.

This video is the only one I know that demonstrates the string twisting while installing it, even though it's a B string. Wrapping it on the tuning peg actually makes it twist, if the ball-end is "locked" at the bridge.

I always find that when I install a new set of 4 strings, the E and A strings always take a longer time to settle in compared to the D and G strings.

I wonder if I am doing something wrong?

Am I the only that experiences that?
 
Thank you everyone for your help, I was able to change out the old strings and successfully put on the new ones. While I was changing the strings tho I looked over the bass and I don't see a truss rod adjuster? The Ibanez Sr505 I have is an older version and has a bolt on neck so it should have one right? I can clearly see the truss rod adjuster on pics of newer models(it's where the neck meets the body), does that mean I can't adjust the neck on mine? I'm not really worried about doing that anytime soon but I'm just wondering for future reference.

New strings will stretch for a while until they settle and hold their tuning. What I've always done after putting on a new set is give each string a few good tugs above the 12th fret, then above the 5th fret and the (sometimes imaginary) 24th fret. Tune up again, repeat as required. I'm aware there may be magic involved, but it's worked every time before a gig.
Yep, what he said. Thankfully they are not like guitar strings and if you stretch them a bit just after installing, that will take care of it. I stretch them pretty hard right after putting them on, tune up, stretch again, tune again and they are usually good to go.
 
I'm about to put on a new set of strings on my 5 string bass. I've read something about "stretching" the strings while putting on a new set. I was wondering is it actually necessary to stretch them and if so what is the proper way? I'm putting on a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky if that matters.

I just make sure to do a good bend with pliers at the end before cutting so it doesn't unravel. No stretching.

(with guitar it's another thing completely - on those ones, you string, tune, do a coupe of bends (2 to 3 steps), tune, bend, repeat until the string no longer goes out of tune by bending)

Of course you can twist a string easily by trying to save time by wrapping the string around the tuning peg instead of using the tuner to take up the slack, and not just the B string either. I’m not recommending this, but I almost always cut the excess length off which makes it a lot easier to get the string up to pitch, and less windings on the peg

I will use pliers to apply a sharp bend at the point where I'm going to cut the excess, just to make sure the core doesn't wander. Once the string is wrapped on the peg, the core should get locked in anyway.

I never wrap any turns on the post by hand, as this could introduce twist. I just keep tension on the string as I turn the tuning key to take up the slack, and make sure the wraps are tight.

Theoretically, tuning the string to a higher pitch (tone or semi-tone) and leaving it sit for a few minutes should do exactly the same thing as pulling on the strings laterally (bending or pulling). If you bend or pull excessively just to stretch the strings, you're putting force on the nut and saddles at unnatural angles, which could cause some undesirable wear over years of use.

The pitch of a given string is a factor of the length of the string, and the tension on it. Stretching a string just means temporarily increasing the tension so that it settles into a new natural length. Tuning it and leaving it for a little while should achieve this. Over tuning it will achieve this faster because of the increased tension.

If you make sure the string is not binding or twisting anywhere as you install it (at the post, nut, saddle, or bridge), you should end up with a string made up of several straight sections: post to nut, nut to saddle, and saddle to bridge. The use of "witness points" just pays attention to possible binding points, because there should be no kinks or bends anywhere in the string once it's under tension.
 
I always pull up on the string while my index finger holds the string in the nut slot as I wind it up. I check the pitch on each string, and if it is sharp, I give it several aggressive tugs until it is close to the proper pitch. Usually you can stretch out a half step.

I have been restringing so long that I have gotten used to what the tension should be by feel, so it is usually pretty close. I will usually aggressively pull them anyways just for fun.

Luckily bass strings don’t detune or sharpen as much as guitar strings do. Yeeeesh. Some guitars don’t break in for weeks.
